Poll question: When you see the acronym "SS" in DU posts and elsewhere...
Edited on Wed Apr-27-05 01:22 AM by Montauk6
Edit: To clarify, obviously the discussions here and elsewhere on social security bring forth the use of the acronym; my point is, given the thrust of this administration, do you not feel this slight mental chill at the juxtaposition of Bush and SS? Hope that makes sense, lol. (Edited again because it's late and I need sleep!)

4. Exactly - when talking about the last two days' big story of the Secret
Service logs showing "Gannon's" extraordinary access to the WH, SS means Secret Service. When talking about Social Security, it means that. I think the context makes the usage clear.

Of course the first synaptic connection on seeing "SS," at least to someone who has been around for a while, is to Hitler's squads.

14. I don't think of Hitler, I just don't want anyone to mistake my tirades
on SS reform to be Secret Service Reform. Plus Secret Service has been on the boards because of all the people ejected from Bush's SS meetings.

We gotta stay clear. I type out exactly what I mean unless the context of SS is already established in the posts before.

3. I'm automatically reminded of the Selective Service
which, in Bu$h's America, may as well be the Schutzstaffel.:scared:

I was thinking of the Waffen-SS rather than all the
other formations.

When you have a one party state and the organization is
adjunct to the party it stretches the definition of
paramilitary.

http://www.answers.com/paramilitary&r=67

Of, relating to, or being a group of civilians organized in a military fashion, especially to operate in place of or assist regular army troops.

I retract my original point but I think calling the SS civilians is a stretch.

I have to shift gears to get Social Security out of it.

I do the same thing when they refer to the Secret Service as "SS"

16. Social Security or Secret Service
Depending upon context.

Sometimes, SS, as in Nazis. Not often though.

Although, there are times when I think it would be appropriate

18. Reminds me of something my Aunt once said
Years ago my Aunt would receive food from a food shelf. She would occasionally get canned goods without labels that would have just the name of the contents written on them with magic marker. She recalled getting one can once that just had the initials "SS." She actually asked the food shelf rep if "SS" stood for "ground-up nazis." (you have to understand my Aunt is a bit of a smart-ass) Ever since then the initials "SS" mean "ground-up nazis" to me!
