All this hatin' goin' on
is kinda funny. I didn't take Mr. Pitt's column too seriously because I think deep down he knows why things are the way they are. Liberals are liberals because we, each of us, followed our own path in life. Conservatives follow the path that somepne laid out for them. That is the essential difference between liberals and cons. So it is not physically possible for us to put aside our own life experiences and lessons in order to seek power. Doing so deny's us of the thing that makes us unique.

Cons on the other hand have no problem putting their belief system in order as prescribed by their televangelist. When your basic belief system is pre-programmed, then your life is easily manipulated. When you are a liberal your have written your own program, and therefore you will not likely set aside your prejudices for the sake of power.

1. I got his point. I do it too
I go back and forth between "purity" and compromise myself.

For example, I was strongly in Richard Morrison's camp despite the fact he was pro-life and that he was even on record as unwilling to block a judicial appointment if that person indicated a willingness to overturn Roe v. Wade. And the man who's apparently going to run against DeLay in TX-22, former Congressman Nick Lampson, voted for the FMA (and even said he stood with Bush on the matter -- along with the vast majority of his 'former' TX-2 constituents.)

It might be that once we achieve majority status in something we'll have the luxury of biting each others' backs.

Until then my humble O is that we better work on getting back in charge again with whoever we can, even if they're not perfectly in line with each and every one of our respective views.

3. I mean, at least those dastardy purists believe in something
Rs believe in nothing. Well, nothing and money. Liberals can't do doublethink: we can be confused on an issue, or work on its kinks, while they can ignore what their eyes clearly see and their positions and rationales twist and turn wildly in the wind. Our ideologues can still work better than their nodeologues any time of day.

4. Some things are negotiable
and some things are not. Allowed deductions for corporate income taxes on net profit are negotiable.

My right to sovereignty in my own body is not.

Mechanisms for ending offshoring are negotiable.

Ending the offshoring that robs the US of its infrastructure and throws people out of work while trying to keep the US as the only market is not.
