1. HHH, RFK?
Edited on Tue Apr-26-05 05:17 AM by Paul Dlugokencky
I nominate Hubert H. Humphrey (at least up to his service as VP), and Robert F. Kennedy.

John Kerry has done some damn good work over the years (investigations and hearings), and he might distinguish himself further post '04.

9. 1948
Before he was a Senator, he boldly took on the segregationist Dixiecrats at the 1948 convention. That's enough for me, but he continued on with a lifetime of distinguished service.

3. You've gotta add
the late great Paul Simon of Illinois. He was never afraid of being a Democrat and was proud of the "old fashioned liberal" label. If people had only been able to get beyond appearances and checked out his stand on issues, I think he would have been a great Democratic Presidential candidate in 1988-and would have made a wonderful President. He was honest, hard working, and didn't use his political office to feather his own nest.

6. Lyndon Johnson?
Charles Sumner?

Daniel Webster?

Robert LaFollette?

History doesn't start with the mid-twentieth century, after all.

8. The tragedy of Mel Carnahan.
I think he would have been a great one. He never danced to any Repug's tune.

10. Mo Udall is my personal hero.....I supported him against Carter in 1976
Edited on Tue Apr-26-05 06:30 AM by Rowdyboy
Sadly, Mo never made it to the senate. He was a long-serving member of the House of Representative.

Other great senators:

Wayne Morse
Philip Hart
Birch Bayh
Frank Church
Mike Mansfield
John Culver
Ed Muskie
Paul Tsongas
Harold Hughes
Hubert Humphrey
Dale Bumpers
David Pryor
Wyche Fowler
Lawton Chiles
Ruebin Askew

and the list goes on....There were some giants in the senate in the period from 1950-1990.
