The next time you're told the media is too liberal, ask them this:
"Give me an example of why it's too liberal?"

If they say "Because (reich-wing nutjob) said so" or repeats a meme, tell them that is not an example but parroting what someone else said. GET them to talk of a media article and rebuke them accordingly.

It may not get any considerable advantage, but at least they might think for themselves when they watch the next night's news.

1. Actually, they will probably have an example
Edited on Mon Apr-25-05 08:09 AM by TheFarseer
like, they keep saying the SS overhaul is unpopular or they buried this story about an illegal immigrant murdering someone or they buried this other story about a democrat doing something bad. I think we have MUCH better examples of media being RW but if they already think it's liberal they won't be convinced but maybe they will at least see another side if you're ready with counter-examples.

on edit - or that Shiavo thing, those people that were protesting outside the hospital were convinced she was perfectly healthy and she was going to get up, walk down the stairs and start tap dancing and juggling flaming clubs for the crowd at any moment except the media wouldn't report what her "true" condition was. They just wanted to see her killed. :eyes:

3. If they say Dan Rather, respond with this
When the memo came out, it was a national media outcry that it may be false and nobody to this day has actually proven the memo false, or disputed its contents. Despite this, CBS launched an internal investigation spearheaded by two friends of Poppy Bush that found no bias at CBS, only a lack of thorough vetting. Despite this, several people at CBS were fired. The rest of the story was also not disputed.

Contrast that to a similar 60 Minutes story from the 1990s. It ran a story with a shaky witness that smeared a sitting president. However, that witness, Kathleen Willey, was later proven a liar in a court of law. How come there was no national outcry over this? Why was nobody at CBS fired over this, especially since it was proven to be false, unlike the memo.

4. also you can say this
if the media is liberal then I suppose you support bringing back 'the fairness doctrine' that way 'your side' will have equal time. The sword of hypocrisy that they swing has a double edge we should pick it up and swing it back at them.

I say we fix the so called liberal media problem and bring back the fairness doctrine.

I am so sick of republicans playing the ohhh we are the victims boo hooo, bs! To them I say work on fixing the problem of the 'liberal media' or shut up your whining it's your boy Ronnie that did away with the fairness doctrine.

They won't do jack about it they know good and damn well that the media isn't liberal it's one of their yapping points that they trot out when they are jammed or if a weee bit of truth comes out about their side.

6. a finer point
on my "the republicans know damn well the media isn't liberal"
I found this by way of David Brock's book 'The Republican Noise Machine" page 10
here it is on line
http://www.journalismjobs.com/matt_labash.cfm

<snip>JournalismJobs.com: Why have conservative media outlets like The Weekly Standard and Fox News Channel become more popular in the past few years?

Matt Labash: Because they feed the rage. We bring the pain to the liberal media. I say that mockingly, but it's true somewhat. We come with a strong point of view and people like point of view journalism. While all these hand-wringing Freedom Forum types talk about objectivity, the conservative media likes to rap the liberal media on the knuckles for not being objective. We've created this cottage industry in which it pays to be un-objective. It pays to be subjective as much as possible. It's a great way to have your cake and eat it too. Criticize other people for not being objective. Be as subjective as you want. It's a great little racket. I'm glad we found it actually.
</snip>

"It's a racket" says Labash. I say game over for these hucksters and by the way what an appropriate last name Labash wonder if it's fake?......Gannon hum mm?
I say "turn that double edged sword on them"
