Maggie Gyllenhaal dares say America in some way brought 9/11 on ittself

Actress: 9/11 our fault
By MAGGIE HABERMAN
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, star of a new flick about the aftermath of 9/11, believes the United States "is responsible in some way" for the devastating terror attacks.

Gyllenhaal, 27, made the comments at the Tribeca Film Festival, where her new movie "The Great New Wonderful" - which has a plot centered on the destruction of the World Trade Center - premiered Friday.

...

And naturally, the FRascists' noses are bent out of shape. I happen to agree with Maggie: it's obvious to anyone with half a rational mind that the US blew it with decades of bad foreign policy, tacit or active support for Middle East martinets, and a failure to engage with religious conservatives in Islam following the defeat of the Soviets in Afghanistan.

Andf let's not forget Chimpy's failure to heed Bill Clinton's advice and keep the focus on counterterrorism.

And don't get me wrong -- Osama and his minions committed mass murder, and MUST be brought to justice. Nevertheless, the sad fact is that our GOP-dominated government completely blew it for decades.

2. Ward Churchhill said the same thing-and he got creamed-but maybe
some more will finally speak out about this. We, as a nation, do NOT treat other nations and their people well.

She will feel the heat mightily--being from Hollywood.

11. Also don't forget
how the US plays pro-Israel because of religious reason's more then likely. The neocons aren't helping any either and they're also playing pro-Saudi Arabia but ignoring all these other countries who could use help. *sigh* Plus Robertson did get it right about 9/11. The reason why they attacked is because we are butting in and in their land. A lot of them don't like that either.

3. Ways the US directly brought 9/11 upon itself
Edited on Sun Apr-24-05 10:32 AM by murdoch
- US government funds Al Qaeda and Taliban in Afghanistan to fight atheistic threat from the socialist Afghan government (and their USSR supporters)
- CIA brings Sheikh Rahman into US over protests of INS. Rahman helps organize first attack on World Trade Center. Then the government went after Rahman's lawyer, Lynne Stewart, a grandmother in her 60s, and is sending her to jail for several decades.
- US puts military bases all over Saudi Arabia and props up Saudi dictatorship despite protests from Saudi citizens.

All three of these things led directly to 9/11. This isn't even mentioning peripheral things like the billions sent to Israel in military aid so they can build settlements in the West Bank and so forth.

4. i certainly see our role in it, and that is without being unamerican
it is facts. doesnt mean what the saudi's did was ok, doesnt mean those 3000 that died deserved it. it is called being responsible in our very own creation. doesnt even mean we deserved it. but in our action of abusing our power out of greed and unfairness, we created the anger at us

5. You're 100% right about the anger toward America...
... in much of the Muslim world. And the fact remains: our government did practically NOTHING to counteract the hatred. And no, I'm not talking about the Voice of America. Our intelligence and state departments should have given this issue though before the proliferation of the Internet and satellite TV.

6. She's going to get Dixie-Chicked
over this. Her comments will get exaggerated and she'll be branded another Jane Fonda by the chickenhawks.
We must defend these people. The continual attacks and annihiliation of anyone who goes against the current regime must not go on without a battle. Dissidents deserve our support. Let's not let people be marginalized by this bullying administration.

7. The flip side; getting 'Dixie-Chicked' may not be so bad...
... after all, the Dixie Chicks had one of their best years after that ginned-up flap over what Natalie Maines said.

Maggie has a big-time progressivestreak, too, and it looks to me as if the journalists (cough) at the Daily News were not very careful with reporting the full context of her comments. It would not surprise me in the least if Maggie uses this little episode to criticize the conservative-leaning media echo chamber.

I know Randi Rhodes is a big fan of Maggie. I wouldn't be surprised if she talks about this little flap during teh week. Stay tuned....

23. yes, getting 'dixie chicked' made them rich
they sold more of that album than the firs two combined, and set a new record for first day ticket sales for their concert, sold out in the first day.

the anti-bill of rights people made Michael Moore rich too.

and that the US really wasn't the innocent party in relation to how they supported Osama in the first place (especially when they thought: Bin Laden terrorizing the Russians "okay," Bin Laden terrorizing the Americans "not so okay"), not to mention things like their support of the Shah of Iran and of bombing the crap out of the Iraqis.

13. There's immense diff between "we DESERVED it" and "we helped CAUSE it"
Unfortunately, many Americans are so brain-washed in their "America uber alles" they are unable to see this FACT.

America wasn't sitting around minding its own business and suddenly out of the blue for no reason attacked.

It's called BLOW-BACK. And blow-back is what happens in RESPONSE to one's actions.

Of course we're partly responsible for 911; our actions in the past is why 911 happened. That does not mean we deserved 911. Just like the Iraqis never deserved being invaded & occupied and murdered and tortured by us.

And when the BLOW-BACK from Iraq hits us, Americans will sit around dazed wondering "Why do they hate us???"

19. Her quote, in it's entirity, is:
"I think what's good about the movie is that it deals with 9/11 in such a subtle, open way that I think it allows it to be more complicated than just, 'Oh, look at these poor New Yorkers and how hard it was for them,'" Gyllenhaal said in red carpet comments Friday to cable channel NY1. "Because I think America has done reprehensible things and is responsible in some way and so I think the delicacy with which it's dealt allows that to sort of creep in," she said.

Whew. Better get her for that. She's using her brain. How absolutely un-American. All of Hollywood is anti-American... unless their rethugs, of course, then their opinion is very important to the American people... reagan, ah-nald, patricia heaton, vince vaughn...

20. She's right and I call her courageous for speaking her mind
...in the current political environment. If 9/11 wasn't L/MIHOP then at the very least our government (over several administrations) is guilty of stirring the pot in which 9/11 was brewed.

Blowback is a bitch.

The victims didn't deserve it. But isn't it always the innocent who pay for the excesses and hubris of government?

21. 911 Attack had little to do with the Bush Junta.
It was in the planning stages for several years. Yes, the U.S. Govt. policies of all previous U.S. Govt.s were the spark that lit the fire. I believe it was LIHOP but perhaps the Bush Junta din't realize the extent of the attack, which is why the shrub just sat there stunned while at least a couple of those planes could have been shot down. Strong rumor is that Flight 93 was shot down.

22. bless her heart. Ovaries plus an opinion is a criminal offense.
They will demonize her. Opining while female in this culture shrivels testicles of men nationwide.

I'll pray for her tonight, because I don't want her to end up another Natalie Maines where they just keep harassing her.
