ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History

The ONE Campaign is a new effort to rally Americans to fight the emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty. Each ONE of us can make a difference. Together as ONE we can change the world.

We can beat:

*
AIDS
*
Starvation
*
Extreme poverty

ONE billion people live on less than ONE dollar a day.

“WE BELIEVE that in the best American tradition of helping others help themselves, now is the time to join with other countries in a historic pact for compassion and justice to help the poorest people of the world overcome AIDS and extreme poverty. WE RECOGNIZE that a pact including such measures as fair trade, debt relief, fighting corruption and directing additional resources for basic needs – education, health, clean water, food, and care for orphans – would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the poorest countries, at a cost equal to just one percent more of the US budget. WE COMMIT ourselves - one person, one voice, one vote at a time - to make a better, safer world for all.”

Sign up to add your voice to support The ONE Campaign Declaration. You will join the growing number of Americans who are getting involved online and in communities across the country to fight global AIDS and poverty through The ONE Campaign.

SIGN UP NOW - they want our voices.

I signed up and ordered wrist bands. I'm walking in the CROP walk next week which is another great way to help poverty and hunger around the world. They also help fight aids and work for sustainable ways for people to be self sufficient. Very worthwhile. feel free to im me for more info and do support if you know someone walking.

DUer's Everyone knows you care about poverty and helping others and DUer's mostly certainly are concerned about AIDS and Africa. Pass it around please......

Wear the white band and show your support for the ONE Campaign and the fight against global AIDS and poverty. Worn by teachers, doctors, and homemakers. You've seen them in the pages of People and US Weekly on your favorite stars, get your band now! The white bands are part of a global effort to make poverty history.

It is crazy how so many people live in poverty and that sooooooo
many more have died from AIDS and still HIV cases keep mounting thanks to racist and ignorant Politician's and medieval church doctrines, you know the no condom theory !
Never mind culture differences and arranged marriages of very young girls in some countries !
Clean running water is like a luxury to so many others .
It just floors me that some still have to carry water and it is not even clean water.
Many children and adults malnourished and others are literally starving to death.
People are still left to die alone and without medication rejected by family and their governments.

27. The hubby and I were watching a show
where a woman in Africa was preparing a "meal" for her family. They lived in a grass hut (literally), maybe 7 ft in diameter. Her husband was very ill (AIDS) and her kids were obviously malnourished. She went "gathering" for some kind of hard-shelled nuts and "greens" (which just looked like weeds) so she could feed her children. She spent hours finding the nuts, and then more hours trying to crack open the things and digging out the meat, which she ground into a white flour. She fried the flour in a pan and mixed in the chopped greens and some filthy water. My husband and I kept making eye contact as we watched her prepare this meal. My husband cracked, "Yum, if there's any left I'll have some of that!"

It was disgusting on a thousand levels. We are so effing rich in this country and just take it for granted...we whine if the Taco Bell doesn't give us enough packets of Hot Sauce!

The hubby and I spent most of the day laying pavers and some sod. This woman in Africa is eating sod, and living in a sod house -- and we're spending more money than she'd have in a year trying to get a perfect grass carpet to walk on!

28. Turn CO Blue I know what you
mean ! I bet you that 'she never bitches about having to work so hard either. She just wants to take care of her family. I saw a documentary on either LinkTv http://linktv.org/
or FreeSpeechTv of this family living in a hut in Africa and like you said she spent the entire day just trying to prepare meals and worked her butt off and her family was so happy and content to be together ! The husband did his business and she did hers' and when ever they were all together which was most of the time this family was enjoying being alive and together.
How many Americans really are happy or thankful toward each other ?
It just blows my mind how people either love with all they have or not at all....

http://www.freespeech.org/fsitv/fscm2/genx.php?name=home

Hopefully, your husband just was releasing nervous tension or something and really did not mean anything by his comment. Or if not your actions can move him to change his attitude. Love can wear off on others especially since you picked him to marry.

I too have trouble with the guilt of living in the richest country in the world. While I'm considered poor by american standards, just the fact that I have food in my cupboard, clean water, and spare change in my pocket makes me part of the wealthiest people in the world. I try not to take it for granted, but our country is sooo materialistic (and greedy). present company excluded:loveya:

33. Oh, the hubby is compassionate

but like all of us in this wealthy country, he is just pretty picky about food. I mean, we all watch gourmet cooking shows for entertainment in westernized countries, and in the USA there is an entire network devoted to food and cooking techniques (the Food Network).

I think he was just shocked to see what these people go through, andthe way that meal looked when it was being prepared and done...and I tend to agree, because if you're not literally starving, it just looked like mushy cooked grass. Not pleasant or appetizing at all. Bless their hearts.

It is true, that we can all learn that the most precious thing in life if to be with the ones we love. You observed that the extreme poor do at least know that. To be that poor and hungry, and to also be lonely, would be the very representation of hell.

We get too distracted here (with all our work and meetings and stresses) to appreciate our families and spending time together, but the quest for more "things" and our obsessive consumerism never enters into the actual equasion for happiness. Of course, I never underestimate the the value and loveliness of a pleasant meal either...

 If we try to put the positive, progressive messages out there, maybe the bickering will stop and we can do something constructive at the same time.

In this day and age, folks should not be dying of hunger, entire generations should not be facing elimination and our nation should be stepping up to do what is right, not what is so damning and destructive.

We can make a difference if we just try.
