Phelps is a democratic who supported civil rights for blacks in the 60s. He is still a democrat and is very against racism. This is one of the reasons why, as a queer person, I don't trust someone on DU just because they are a democrat and 'seem' alright until I'm sure where they stand on many issues.

As an aside, Phelps tells the children of his church (many are relatives, but not all) that fags have sex 'in the butthole' and rape little children. I've seen it in documentaries. It is most certainly child abuse.

A story, true. When my son was about 8, we bought tickets to "Stomp" at a performing arts theater in Topeka. We thought our son would really enjoy seeing live performance in a good venue. It ain't opera, but what do you do? It was on a Sunday afternoon, and we planned and dressed nicely, and we drove quite a bit and spent quite a bit of money, and we were excited to share it all together. Then...

Fred's little tribe of children, women, and a guy were parading on the sidewalk, singing and carrying signs. The signs were a parody of crossing signs, only they had male characters, one bent over the other's back. Also, God Hates Fags, and other disgusting shit. They were talking YELLING at the folks coming for the performance. Another woman trying to enter the theater said loudly to them "Why aren't you in church?".

We gave a short explanation to my son. It put a pall on the day, at least for me. I don't mind talking to my child about sexuality of any sort. But I did not like explaining about the way people can go so far out of their way, so far out of their minds, to try to hurt other people and to spoil a day for some folks just trying to have some fun.

The Westboro Church is not parody. It is real. But this is not the way most of us are, here in the great State of Kansas. They are a very vocal, very media-savvy, very nasty little nest of vipers. And, powerless. Unless you count their tax-free status.

A few years ago, Phelps and his church members were planning to picket or protest a local high school production of a play. Some educator got wind of it, and sent out a message. We could pledge a dollar for every minute the protesters were there. The money went to the Good Samaritan Project, which provides support to HIV people. The protesters lasted about 12 minutes. There were some (a lot) of counter-protesters. The Good Samaritan Project received more than $2500, if I recall correctly.

Some of those children have sick-looking shadows under their eyes. Few look happy. Poor kids.
