Desperate Bangladeshi mother puts eye on sale
Desperate Bangladeshi mother puts eye on sale

No price set, but woman seeks funds to feed daughter.

DHAKA - A Bangladeshi woman desperate for money after she was abandoned by her husband has offered to sell one of her eyes.

“I desperately looked for a job to live with my two-and-half-year-old daughter, Meem,” the woman, 26-year-old Shefali Begum, told Reuters on Thursday at her slum dwelling in Dhaka.

“But I could not find any ... and decided to sell one of my eyes. What do I do with both eyes while my daughter will die for want of milk and food?

2. Hard to say -
I imagine it's more than enough to buy this lady and her child some food. How very sad.

3. And just what do the earnings of U.S. execs
have to do with this? If you're so concerned about this one particular person I'm sure you have more than enough to buy them some food. Instead of making yourself feel better by transferring the blame to some generic US Exec get off your ass and do something on your own.

11. I hope you don't mean me.
Because before I even posted this article I contacted the news source and inquired about how I could provide aid. I'm sure you would not have attacked me without taking the time to ask that first. I do this quite regularly in other situations as well. Whenever I can afford to do so.

I am going to assume that you were replying to the other poster that brought this up, since I said I had no idea what other people's income's were, and I blamed NO ONE. I did, however, take the time to post the article in order to draw attention to this woman's plight and others like her. I thought it was an interesting and poignant story.

I "get up off my ass" to help others less fortunate than me everyday, it's what I do for a living, so yes, I KNOW you didn't mean me.

12. My apologies, I suffer from post-lexia.
When I feel like responding I sometimes just hit the closest reply button (as evidenced by my other post in this thread). You sound like a kind soul, I hope you connect with this lady.

13. Thanks...
I hope so too. Hopefully others will see the article and respond too - and to others like her who need the help.

4. And how much discretionary income do you have?
I imagine it's more than enough to buy this lady and her child some food.

5. It is, but that's not the point.
I'm not asking someone else to do something that I have the capacity to do on my own.

6. Ooooh do I detect a dig?

Despite the fact that I posted a human rights piece to draw attention to this woman's plight? What the hell is your problem? Until you have information on how much of my time, effort, and money I donate to charity, I suggest you refrain from your sanctimonious remarks toward me when I have done nothing wrong.

FWIW, I have already contacted the news outlet and offered to provide aid. But you didn't bother to ask that before you made a jab at me did you?

8. Sanctimonious? Pointing out sanctimony isn't sanctimonious.
And I did ask, didn't I? Wasn't it in form of a question?

10. There wasn't a grain of sanctimony on MY PART.
Edited on Thu Apr-21-05 11:16 PM by Vektor
I posted an article that I wanted to share. You made unfair assumptions about me for whatever reason, without bothering to ask if I had offered any aid.

I have contacted the news agency and inquired where aid can be sent and I have done this on many other occasions. I donate a large percentage of my discretionary income to various charities, and do a significant amount of volunteer work of various kinds. I was merely posting an article about a woman in an unfortunate situation. I never attacked anyone, and I was not the one who asked about executive's incomes. I answered that I could not be sure how much that was, but surely, it was enough to provide some aid. I never implied that these hypothetical executives were not willing to offer aid, but merely suggested they might be able to.

I never expressed any sanctimony whatsoever - only compassion toward this poor lady's plight. I thought posting the article might help draw attention to it. That's all.

14. What is really tragic is that people on this thread are more
concerned about your supposed "sanctimony" than about the plight of this woman and others like her. (pardon my sanctimony)

How sad that people have to suffer like this when there is so much wealth in the world.

15. It is...
I was seriously dumbfounded that I even got attacked on this one. Seriously - I did not intend a grain of harm. It never ceases to amaze me what will piss people off. (??)
