Question for DU Catholics re: the Papal Tiara
I was watching a show on the History Channel last night about the history of Papal elections.

They talked briefly about the Papal Tiara and mentioned that it hadn't been worn since Pope Paul VI.

Is there some particular reason for this, or was it just a matter of personal preference for the subsequent Popes?

1. I'm a former Catholic
I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm fed up with the Catholic church. Fuck them all and their conservative, pedophile priests.

3. Pope John Paul I
refused to wear it- he wanted to open Catholicism to the masses & make it more people friendly. He felt he was doing gods work- not ascending to a throne. Naturally he was killed within 33 days.

5. Yeah, the Illuminati had to take him out so he wouldn't

tell about Mary Magdalene being secretly married to Jesus. That's why they killed Dan Brown -- oh, wait, he's still alive, isn't he?

:eyes:

*Maybe* someone did poison John Paul I. Or maybe he just died suddenly, as people can do, especially people his age.

I think it's unfortunate and rather silly that people so revere John XXIII and John Paul I and so despise other popes who were no more conservative than either of them.

4. Monarchies aren't fashionable anymore so the

trappings of monarchy are out of fashion, too. At some point in history popes became like kings in their power, and often in their ruthless behavior -- it's no secret to Catholics that some bad actors have been popes. Rich families essentially could buy the papacy for a loser of a son or nephew. In more recent centuries, though, the popes have been more genuinely religious men, just as more recent national leaders have tended to be more interested in justice and humanity, with some very notable exceptions.

That's the only reason that I know of, except that the papal tiara is probably heavy and extremely uncomfortable.

Unlike the first poster, I'm proud to be Catholic and I love the Church. It's like any large group, having a few bad people, a few saintly people and a whole lot of people who try to be decent people and succeed at least half of the time.

I don't know of any group that's composed entirely of saints, and I have reeaerched this topic for many years! ;-)
