Is there a website or sites that....
I can go to....and search news stories from any year I input?

As an example...if I wanted a listing of 1999 news stories or events is there a site where I can find that information?

3. Get thee to a Library
and ask a Reference Librarian.

Otherwise, Google is a good suggestion, sorry you didn't like it.

Also, try the WayBack Machine at http://www.archive.org/web/web.php . You can search the sites of NYTimes, Washington Post, etc., by year.

4. Nice archive link. But I'd call the librarian. Unless the BA's
cut their phone budget.

Why walk when you can talk?

"eerrr google" is only a good response when you're NOT answering a superb researcher, imho.

6. Yeah, I was going to suggest Lexis-Nexis
As a (former) librarian, I was going to suggest Lexis-Nexis, which most libraries subscribe to (it's a subscription service; while it's possible for individuals to subscribe, it is very expensive, so typically only businesses, libraries, governments, and organizations subscribe).

But like you said, Get thee to a library!

:)

7. I was not being a "smart ass" but we not going to hold your hand either
Here are a couple of searches to start with...

go to http://news.google.com

now figure out what you want to search for.... lets says is all articles that have the year 1999 in the text or byline and come from the BBC....

Your search query?

intext:1999 inurl:BBC

Again, RTFM. This is pretty standard stuff, don't expect a post to DU to give you the information you are looking for. And damn sure do be sarcastic, next time I'll leave you hanging in the wind....

8. I take it
you're not familiar with who Andy Stephenson is? Otherwise I doubt you'd be answering him the way you are.

9. Did he ask for his hand to be held?
He just asked a simple question, not for us to do his research for him.

14. I don't need hand holding...
didn't ask for hand holding. Just wanted an expedited way to search for what I am looking for.

Usually I am very adept at finding stuff for myself. Sarcasm is my trademark if you don't like it...well too damn bad. That is just me.

BTW didn't you see the :hi: if you had you would have known I was joking with you. Sheez.

17. No Prob Andy...
Edited on Thu Apr-21-05 09:32 PM by MazeRat7
But let me give you a few pointers about myself...

First, emoticons are lame. I could care less what the smiley guy is saying.... I care what you are saying.

Second, too many people ask questions before doing the work either a) because they are lazy or b) they dont know how. I will bend over backwards to help b-types all day long.

Keep in mind, technology is what folks pay me to do... for that reason alone I am a bit jaded about "joe average' user. I'm sorry, but your post sounded very much to me like "joe average" where do to I find X... help me help me.. I dont have a brain.

Perhaps if your post had been worded, " I have tried to find a site that....."
my response would not have been to treat you like a typical net-newbie.

So we both walk away with something. I am sorry I didn't know "who" you are...(at DU) but you should always remember that in this medium, there are folks like me that will bristle at lamers asking for help when they have not attempted to do the work themselves. Or at least indicated that they made an attempt.

I am sorry if I "offended" you, but I am who I am too....

*peace.

18. Sorry I might have offended you as well....
normally I am a crack researcher. But I have been sick as of late and wanted a bit of a shortcut because sitting here is a huge task for me right now. I just thought someone here could lead me in the right direction.

19. Again, no prob. we're cool...
Do you still need that list ? Is is simply all news articles from 1999 or can you refine it somewhat to a specific topic, group, event, etc. I don't mind taking a few to refine the query and do the hunt... but everything from 1999 is kind of a long list... *KWIM ?

11. Andy,
I don't know if this source will help you but it may... it's called NewsLibrary. They charge $2.95 to see the entire article but it may give you enough info from their search engine to avoid the extra charge.
