Santorum tries to ban free weather from NWS in favor of competitors
Feds' weather information could go dark

By Robert P. King

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Thursday, April 21, 2005

Do you want a seven-day weather forecast for your ZIP code? Or hour-by-hour predictions of the temperature, wind speed, humidity and chance of rain? Or weather data beamed to your cellphone?

That information is available for free from the National Weather Service.

But under a bill pending in the U.S. Senate, it might all disappear.

The bill, introduced last week by Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., would prohibit federal meteorologists from competing with companies such as AccuWeather and The Weather Channel, which offer their own forecasts through paid services and free ad-supported Web sites.

And the way he's polling in Pennsylvania especially against Bob Casey Jr - he'll be sent packing back to his home in Virginia

2. His idiocy and lack of priorities never ceases to amaze me.
One more reason to get him out of here (PA) in 06.

4. If the Rethugs could privatize the air we breathe, they would
Hopefully the slimy slug Santorum's days are numbered. I would so like to see him go down, the little piece of shit.

5. This will make my son nuts!!
He's a Meteorologist.

He says that most of the people he knows in NWS are big-time Repubs...pretty conservative as a group....

This will probably mean job cutbacks in the future and probably explains the big cut in NWS funding for this fiscal year....

13. No -- but they DO contribute to his campaigns
Edited on Thu Apr-21-05 08:35 PM by KamaAina
they're based in State College, PA, where (according to another DU thread) they have a really crappy reputation as employers.

Also: They seem to be controlled by Ayn Rand followers, or as we used to call them, "Randroids".

Edit: Step right up! Get yer LBN link right here:

11. Did anyone ask this asshat where the rest of the broadcasters get
their info? Listen to any weather show,a nd you'll hear them talk about the Fopler radar, and the National Weather Fortcasters.

I sure don't want people to die because of this idiot, but I almost would like to see him succeede in this, and have a tornado hit in some isolated part of Kansas or Texas, where noone was hurt, BUT if it had been in a populated area...millions could have been! Lets just prove him to be the idiot he is!
