1. Jesus was a LIBERAL
We just need to repeat that enough to force folks to check their Bibles and see that it's true. BTW, I'm not religious, but was raised with full Catholic doctrine, and it was obvious to me what the values of JC were. They are pretty much the opposite of what the religious right claims.

3. Jesus was liberal in many ways - but not sure politically
What I mean by that is, his words were for the people - and when he sent his people out with his message it was not to change the government but the hearts and minds of people.

He was indeed understanding, but also firm that people change their ways. See their sin and change their lives - and the notion of sin in general is where things get to a sticking point I think in a broader sense.

All this is where, to me, the debate is centered. Jesus was very liberal in how we as people should be towards others, no doubt there in my mind really. But he was also conservative when it came to people quitting what they were doing that was wrong and changing their lives to do right. "Go, and sin no more" he has said - what does that mean? To define that we must understand what he considered to be sin in the broader sense.

Then too we have the rest of the NT, do we discount that and take only what we like? I ask this because it is quite conservative in some ways (on a personal level - not politics). In the broader sense it is conservative where the person and church are concerned but it is not a guide for how the government of a nation should act - it is for those whom choose to follow it. The government can be totally liberal, and that should not affect how one leads their personal relationship with God. Therefore, to me, it is good to have an open and liberal government free with choices to people and allow the people decide how they themselves will act within that free framework. Gay marriage, abortion, and on down the line - how the government treats it should not have an affect on one's own ability to lead their lives right with the Lord. Just because something is legal does not mean you have to do it - and just because you believe something is right to God does not mean you have to make others do what you think is right.

Jesus was, to me, a liberal conservative - liberal on how you have choices, conservative on what those choices should be in the framework of right and wrong in relation to God.
