Poll question: Do you consider Pope Benedict XVI a fundamentalist?
Edited on Wed Apr-20-05 08:01 PM by arcos
Yes or no... there are lots of other threads supporting both points of view.

on edit:

Good idea from Junkdrawer... this is the definition of "fundamentalism".

"In comparative religion, fundamentalism refers to anti-modernist movements in various religions."

2. Catholic "Fundamentalist" is different than Protostant ones
even though the meida often ties the two together, the Catholic Traditionalists (which is a closer name) are often different than Prostant ones.

8. Catholicism is in many ways diametrically opposed to fundamentalism
First of all, Catholicism does not teach that every single story in the Bible is literally true.

Also the doctrine of transubstantiation is definitely against fundamentalist beliefs. As is praying to the saints and/or The Blessed Mother for intercession.

And actually not every conservative Protestant is a fundamentalist either.

5. Exactly
"Roman Catholicism also has those members who could be considered fundamentalists, but they most often are called Traditional Catholics or Catholic traditionalists. Well known traditional Catholics include the actor Mel Gibson and his father Hutton Gibson. This group of members rejects the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. In some cases they have broken away from the mainstream church and reject those Popes who they see as heretics - which usually they consider to be every Pope from John XXIII on."

This Pope was one of the ARCHITECTS of Vatican II, and was strong proponent of those reforms.

9. Wasn't there a priest
in France who got excommunicated for refusing to go with the Vatican II changes -- he insisted on doing the Mass in Latin, for example?

12. An archbishop, actually.
Marcel Lefebvre. Probably the most prominent schismatic of the past 40 years or so.

He founded something called the "Society of Saint Pius X", dedicated to opposing the reforms of Vatican II, and insisted upon ordaining bishops without papal authority, for which he was excommunicated.

11. I think the older Ratzinger is generally seen as distancing himself...
from Vatican II or, at the very least, redefining what Vatican II meant.

BTW: I voted Yes

4. No, only because I don't find the term a particularly Catholic one.
I'd call him a traditionalist. Though it probably amounts to the same thing.
