Question about the Pope's objection to liberation theology
This is a subject I do not know much about. What was Ratzinger's objection to liberation theology. From his point of view, what was the evil?

Please no flaming Catholics, I just want to understand the issue.

1. I'm sure what his particular objection is
but to me "liberation theology" is a classic oxymoron. Religion is all about rules, restrictions and oppression. I guess liberation theology makes an attempt to break out of that, but it's a red herring; nothing that involves religion can be liberating except for getting all of it out of your life.

Idon't believe that is true.

2. Simple
Liberation theology calls for land reform and workers controlling production. It is, therefore, somewhat Marxist in tone. Ratzinger is strongly against liberalism in general, much less Marxist and socialism. These things are complete anathema.

The better question would be, why would Ratzinger ever approve of liberation theology, not what did he have against it.

3. Thanks for the answer
So it was not doctrinal according to Catholic teachings?

5. Definitely not.
The term has only been around since the 1970s, and John Paul II never made it official, which means it's never been official church doctrine. Hope that helps!
