I'm still giddy from the Clark announcement, and I have this (faint, but getting ever so louder by the day) belief that the pendulum is moving.

17. From 'The Second Coming'
Very dark poem, but very cool :)

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood- dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in the sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its' slow thighs, While all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches toward Bethlehem to be born?

-- William Butler Yeats

23. Same here . . .
I think the first time I had ever heard of the poem was in Stephen King's 'The Stand', and he only used the line I quote first, and the last 2 lines of the poem.

It was eerie then, nad even more so when I tracked down the whole thing and read it.

22. Not really...
The only official powers the vice president has are to preside over the senate and to help the cabinet decide if the president is disabled. Therefore officially it was Bush's decission and Chenney had nothing to do with the decission to use Halliburton for Iraq, although we know that's bullshit.

4. Watching CNN
The other night, they ran a bit contrasting current Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, Rice, and Bush quotes and previous quotes on Iraq from +/- March - April.

Not news to be as I was listening at the time.

It was interesting because it put their BS in high relief.

It was even more interesting because CNN thought to do it and air it.

I agree, something is suddenly (last week or two) up here.

A hypothesis, Franken, Clinton, Conason, Moore....5 of top 15 NYT best sellers with a well left of center point of view. (Trying not to be too cynical) But, maybe they are beginning to think that there is a market in a bit of liberal thinking....

and we don't know what it is YET. The ninth circuit court of appeals ruling re the California recall is part of this, too.

And I believe the Clark announcement is significant in this respect. I'm a Kucinich supporter but I see how easily he, and many of the other Democratic candidates, can be pigeon holed and ignored by the corporate media. This won't be so easy with Clark. Clark entering the ring brings a NEEDED media attention to Democratic prospects.

35. Hallucinating, maybe...
Our society wet down the rabbit hole and through the looking glass some 30 years ago -- so, indeed, almost anything is possible. However, what this really means is that novelty is increasing; it is becoming increasingly difficult--even for the Neo-cons--to predict with any certainty precisely what is going to happen. Where you and I are, we barely even know the real players (almost always invisible, and behind the scenes).

The Bush Cabal is a criminal enterprise. They are traitors and murderers acting at the behest of their own and other vastly powerful and wealthy interests. The Congress is largely corrupted compromised. The Judiciary probably even more so. The 'Fifth Estate' is bought and paid for. Meanwhile, the infrastructures that define mechanized and technological 'civilization' remain dependent on declining reserves of non-renewable energy.

It is not an exaggeration to say that the whole of humanity is rapidly approaching a crisis point--being DRIVEN toward it is more accurate. The events of 9/11 were a psychic driver, meant to put our society precisely where it is (docile, stunned, shocked and awed, fearful, angry, mailable). HOWEVER, those who made the decision to drive us to this point are NOT the only players in the Big Game.

If we are going to get beyond this mess we are in (and by 'we', here, I'm not only referring to the industrialized nations) we are going to have to find something in ourselves that is finer and more true than 'our own best interests'. The time when humanity can be divided into factions based on religious, political, economic, racial or even CLASS differences is rapidly coming to an end.

To put it bluntly THE WHOLE OF CIVILIZATION IS ABOUT TO BE RESTRUCTURED. Of course, this is what the Neo-cons want, too--only what they envision is the furtherance of class tyranny: the subjugation of the human spirit (the 'masses') to a fascist World Order. What they fail to understand is that the time of this hierarchical 'self' vs 'other' way of thinking is precisely what is coming to an end. It is an epistemological error highlighted and underscored via every branch of science--especially cybernetics, ecology and quantum physics. Future History will show the Neo-cons as the narrow-minded Inquisitors of our age--hell bent on preventing us from seeing the Big Picture: WE ARE ALL ONE LIVING FORCE ON THIS PLANET. What we are witnessing are the death-throws of post-Renessance Western Civilization and the emergence of a completely new possibility: Global Consciousness.

Indeed, we live in interesting times: a unique historical moment. What you and I think and do plays its small part in the whole of what is now taking place.

As strange as it is, YOU ARE HERE NOW. Are you paying attention?

Okay, so laugh at me. But I wondered why no Supreme Court justices resigned this past summer. Rumor had it that one or two of them were thinking of stepping down. Then nothing happened. Could it have been that some of the moderate conservatives who have been thinking about retirement are loathe to give Bush the power to radicalize the court. Or is this just wishful thinking on my part?

The other members of the junta have now turned on a dime and are asserting that they never claimed there was any link between Iraq and Sept 11. It just so happened that Rump got the new script first.

This is exactly what I predicted: they are reinventing the propaganda in the face of changing opposition tactics. This is exactly how perpetual revolution works.

You underestimate the mental flexability of the rabid right. The new information will be fully assimilated and will completely displace the old. Think of it as a firmware update: once the new propaganda has been downloaded, no trace of the old propaganda will remain. Once the administration's new party line has been fully propagated, every right wing bot will assert that there was never any suggestion that Iraq was in any way connected to Sept 11.

Paul Vitello talks of Americans as if we are gullible and can't form opinions <"Slice of Just Deserts for American Pious," News, Sept. 9>. A majority of the people in our nation believe in what President George W. Bush is doing, but Vitello calls us misguided. People aren't happy with the cost and consequences of war, and he further scoffs.

Well, I am not happy that men and women have died in combat, but I know it is necessary. Saddam Hussein hates the United States, and I believe he has ties to al-Qaida. Vitello wants proof, but Middle East countries are not the United States, so maybe evidence like bank statements and recordings of conversations does not exist.

I'm a New York City firefighter, and I saw Bush promising us that "those who are responsible for this will hear us soon." They did, and they still are!

46. Interesting that the Clark picture is #2 on the Yahoo top pictures list
...and shows up about 5 times in the top 15 or so. Not sure what that indicates, but photos seem to earn their rankings separately from the stories themselves. Lotta people must like the way he looks?

65. I don't mean to rain on the parade....
but it looks like the Dems. are going to give them another pass.

"September 16, 2003—Democrats in Congress have abandoned their efforts to investigate the White House's use of questionable intelligence information about Iraq's alleged stockpile of weapons of mass destruction, saying the issue has been "eclipsed" by President Bush's request for $87 billion from Congress to continue funding the war there.

David Helfert, a spokesman for Congressman David Obey, D-Wisconsin, who criticized the White House for relying too heavily on murky intelligence to get support for the war, said Friday that congressional Democrats would no longer pursue hearings on the intelligence matter.

"We're past that," Helfert said, referring to the intelligence issue. "Those questions were eclipsed by the supplemental request by President Bush for $87 billion" to fund the Iraq war. "Congress is focusing on asking questions about the $87 billion, what it will be used for and whether it's worth it. It would be a good characterization to say that the intelligence questions on Iraq and how the president came to believe that it had weapons of mass destruction are no longer an issue."
