Fundie Creationist versus Utahraptor - Who would win?
Edited on Sat Apr-16-05 02:59 PM by Zynx
Information on Utahraptor:

http://dsc.discovery.com/stories/dinos/bbc/fact_files/sky/utahraptor.html

Short version - one of the "raptors" from Jurrassic Park, with a big shot of steroids and an even larger brain case. Sucker would probably have been smarter than current parrots or chimps. Two meters tall, main claw has a cutting surface 20cm long. :wow:

Now, according to the religious fundamentalists, we lived with these guys, because God created everything a few thousand years ago.

So, who would win? Redneck homeschooler or the dino? Keep in mind the raptor probably shows much more tactical intelligence than most rednecks - particuarly those from ranches outside Crawford,TX.

1. remember, Satan placed the fossil record in the earth...
...to deceive the elect into thinking the earth is more than 6,000 years old, which we of course know is not true. The fossils were there shortly after the (Christian version of ) creation. Except for a few dinosours referenced in the Old Testament, and they were all destroyed in the flood of Noah.

that's the straight up truth. some fundies told me so.

3. I've heard the same from 'em
Edited on Sat Apr-16-05 03:23 PM by Zynx
But I don't like the concept of an omnipotent Satan all that much - this is not comforting, nor is it Christian - God does not have anything approaching an equal - which is what it takes for something to defy the laws of physics like the fundie Satan does.

That people believe that does scare me, though.

I don't get why God hates dinosaurs, though. Are they unclean? O8)

4. No, it's pretty much a straight-up GNOSTIC concept!
Sadly, few of them are EDUCATED enough to understand what that means.

5. God put the dino fossils there
No. No. God put the dino fossils in the ground to confuse the un-elect (that would be us).

Maybe they died in the flood because, like, there was no way Noah was going to let those Utahraptors on the boat.

7. They would just have to tell mr. Raptor the "Good News"
and hope he's not one of those GAY dinosaurs.

8. I'd pay to see that.
60:1 odds on the raptor.

9. Yeah, I'd also pay to see them get "Raptored"...
There's a much better joke in this somewhere, I'm sure...but I can't think of it right now.

10. Since Utahraptor is my favorite dinosaur and fundies are my least
favorite people, I'm betting on Utahraptor!

BTW, other theropods in the same family as Utahraptor (dromaeosaurs) had feathers. It is suspected that Utahraptor was probably feathered as well.

So, how would a fundy react to a feathered Utahraptor? It can't possibly have feathers because only birds have feathers. But birds aren't dinosaurs because all the dinosaurs died out in the flood...

Poor fundies.

12. Check out "microraptor."
http://www.luisrey.ndtilda.co.uk/html/micro.htm

Could microraptor beat up a fundy?

13. Most paleontologists believe the smartest dinosaur wasn't that smart.
So far, troodontids (formerly stenonchysaurs) have the largest brain-to-body-size ratio of any fossil dinosaur. Paleontologists say this would make troodon comparable to ostriches in intelligence. Last time I looked, ostriches weren't that smart. Perhaps smarter than a freeper, but not that smart. :D

In the book version of Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton claimed velociraptors were much smarter than they probably were. He uses the obvious similarities between dromaeosaurs (the dinosaurian raptor family) and birds and the well-established fact of parrot intelligence to arrive at an erroneous conclusion.

Troodontids are very similar to dromaesaurs. Here is an artist rendition of troodon, which looks like a thinner version of velociraptor:

When it comes to avian intelligence, brain-to-body-size ratio is important. Parrots and corvids (ravens, crows, etc.) have a large brain in comparison to their bodies. They also have a large striatal area in their brains that is lacking in other bird families. Parrots and corvids can do quite a lot with those fascinating brains of theirs. Dr. Irene Pepperberg has studied parrot intelligence and has learned parrots are astonishingly intelligent. It is quite possible African grey parrots are the most intelligent non-human animal.

I would like to see brain-to-body-size comparisons between birds and mammals. Avian brains are completely different from mammalian brains, but seem equipped to handle many of the same kinds of functions. If the brain-to-body-size ratio of an African grey parrot is remarkedly smaller than the brain-to-body-size ratio of chimpanzee, then Crichton's speculation could be true. Perhaps the brains of birds function differently and can do more with less space.

17. Um, yeah. Pretty much.
Dinosaurs are way more cool and I never got to study paleontology or evolution because I went to a fundamentalist school. I am thirsty for this knowledge.

18. Not sure who would win in a fight
But the raptor would probably subscribe to a more benevolent theology.
