C-SPAN 2 - David Shipler, author, "The Working Poor: Invisible in America"
is on now - 1:00 pm central time. I thought some might be interested, I've seen several DUers recommend this book in the past.

2. Welcome!
The folks on DU who had mentioned this book got my interest up, so I was glad to find this while flipping channels.

:D

3. yuppies aint interested in the working poor
Mumia, sure, but not the working poor. Not fashionable.

As for the Republicans--they think the working poor must be sinners, cuz they aint rich.

4. True. Poverty is just not a big issue among what now passes for a "Left"
in this country--and on this site.

Now if it were a CSPAN program about cats, we would be up to 150 responses by now.

5. Just got home from shul and was playing spin the dial
and saw Mr Shipler...finally some sense on BookTV. I was beginning to wonder whether it should be called conservative booktv.

Reminder...there are students at Washington University in St Louis who are currently on a hunger strike. They are striking in support of a living wage for contracted cleaning and cafeteria staff at the private university.

6. Wow, I am impressed! Most people don't even notice the cleaning ...
staff etc - they usually are considered part of the background. (I say this as a housekeeper. It's alot like being a bartender - people start to forget you are right in front of them, like drapes or a tv).

7. Strange that I've never heard of him or his book. Particularly since,...
,...the one dream I've always imagined, if I were ever resourceful enough to achieve it, was to travel across our country to reveal "The Hidden America": the poor and struggling and oppressed, hidden away and made invisible by a media that avoids such realities.

I doubt I'll buy Mr. Shipler's book,...since it will only confirm what I've already witnessed,...and would simply torment my already torn, human soul.

If only we could break through the illusions, the lies,...the psychological and emotional manipulations,...and get grounded in reality and our common humanity.

Life is a freakin' struggle for the vast majority of us,...a near death sentence for some of us,...a heartache, at some point, for all of us,...a power trip for the elite,...a self-serve station for a few,...a hope for a better future by most who have any love left in their hearts.

NO ONE should be concealed or rendered "invisible" IF all "life" is truly valued.
