Cheney's tax return includes his 203,000-dollar government salary and 194,852 dollars in deferred compensation from Halliburton, the oil services firm he headed until 2001. It also includes Lynne Cheney's salary from the American Enterprise Institute, a Washington think tank, and compensation from the Reader's Digest, on whose board she served until 2003.

1. I expect to have made about that amount...
When I'm about 75 years old, total, from when I started working, until retirement, assuming inflation continues as it has been.

9. Another $194,000 from Halliburton
Keep that in mind when some overrich Republican dickhead tries to tell you that lazy welfare folks are getting money they don't earn -- as if the $12,000 in annual benefits is worth the condescension and humiliation. What was Cheney doing last year that he "earned" $194,000 from Halliburton, nearly as much as his paycheck for his regular job?

But of course, that doesn't have anything to do with all those no-bid contracts Halliburton has gotten from the government for work it's not doing and services it's not providing in Iraq, so stop saying that! Neither does the fact that Cheney was paid about $19,000 more this year by Halliburton than he was paid last year, so stop saying that, too!

11. how long does he have to cash in his halliburton options?
that's where he'll kill, now that halliburton---which was losing $1B a year in the two year run up to the war----is raking in our hard earned dough.

The White House also released the 2004 tax return filed by Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne.

The report shows the Cheneys owe federal taxes for 2004 of $393,518 on adjusted gross income of $1.7 million.

Throughout last year, the Cheneys paid $290,855 in taxes through withholding and estimated tax payments. When they filed their return on Friday, they paid the remaining $102,663.

14. Yeah - where the hell did the rest of that come from?
And why is he still getting paid by Halliburton?

I fell just a tad short of his income. First, they cut out the overtime, then we went to 35-hour weeks, now there are rumors of layoffs.

Remind me again how good the economy's doing... I'm having a little trouble focusing.

What's Cheney's net worth, anyway? Could he have $900,000 in investment income?

16. Wrong
Cheney made WAY WAY WAY more than that. I wish I had the chart in front of me but when the tax breaks in first term were put forth THE NATION did an excellent piece on how much the Admin. would save. They showed total income-net worth and Cheney's income was reported to be several to more than ten million a year. There was a wide gap in possible income as much of it is in bizarre stock holdings. he's also making tons off the books. people should not even focus on Bush- don't even mention his name for that lets the real sinister bastard(s) off the hook. Bush is just a clumsy junkie.

Cheney Was a Gusher Deal for Halliburton

Let's not begrudge Dick Cheney his $36 million income last year. Sure, it dwarfs the puny $744,682 reported by the President, but George W. Bush represents old money, and he knows better than to be too showy, particularly when you're running for office as a Joe Six-Pack kind of guy. Better to roll over the income from inherited money into tax-protected accounts.

Cheney didn't have time for such accounting niceties. Bush caught him right in the middle of a tax year with that Vice President nod, and remember, Cheney was only supposed to be advising Bush on the best choice for Veep. How was Cheney to know he'd be forced to recommend himself as the most qualified?

***

Even after taxes, Cheney cleared more than $20 million in 2000. If the Bush tax cut had been in effect last year, Cheney would've saved another couple of million, to which he obviously feels entitled.

***

For the Texas-based Halliburton, there initially was some concern. Only two years ago, with the company's stock floundering, the board of directors chastised Cheney for the company's poor performance. But then came the presidential election, and those same directors must have figured they had died and gone to heaven after Cheney got the Veep nod. That's when the board of directors turned around and rewarded him with an incredibly lucrative severance package providing the bulk of his reported $36 million income in 2000.

20. Bookmarked
Let's revisit this on Sunday when many are on board. You nailed it with this comment. The Bush gossip gets tedious and cannot explain who is behind the curtain and how the system works.

"We need to spend less time ridiculing Bush and more time exposing Cheney."
