1. That organization takes a very reasonable and realistic approach to

the relationship of religion and politics. I've read some of their stuff before. But the unfortunate thing is that these Catholics are in the minority.

My daughter got angry with me the other day. She was talking about how so many people are calling for the canonization of Pope John Paul II. And I told her that I disagreed and I didn't think that he was all that these people think he was. True, he was a brave man, but he did not break the back of the Communists in Poland like she was told he did. He was steadfast in his faith and a very religious man. But he lost my tired old ass when he said that most of the problems in the world today are because women have forgotten their place. Right there was the tip off that he was just another one of the good ol' boys full of blather and superstition and who were destroying all the progress the Church had made, and he wanted to send us right back into the dark ages.

Even when I see Catholic literature that seems reasonable and sane I always have to wonder what the catch is. Obviously I'm way too cynical.
