Erasing Debts in Bankruptcy to Get Harder
by Rob Hotakainen

WASHINGTON -- Thousands of Americans will be prevented from erasing their debts under a bankruptcy bill approved by Congress on Thursday.

The House vote was 302-126; it passed the Senate last month. President Bush said he would sign the bill, the largest overhaul of the nation's bankruptcy laws since 1978.

4. My Congressman (Israel-NY2nd) is on that list
I called his office to let him know how disgusted I was and that I would remember it when they called for money next time round. And Carolyn McCarthy, too! I'm so disappointed in her- she's real people-she's the nurse who ran for Congress when her husband was killed and her son seriously wounded in the Long Island Railroad massacre. Her congressman (Dan hide in the garage Frisa) voted against the assault weapons ban and she ran for Congress. I worked for her campaign when I lived in her district. I'm so disillusioned in her. Israel is a very middle of the road, not stick your neck out kind of guy., Better than Rick Lazio, but not great.

6. Mostly a "who's who" are corporate Dems.
I looked at the California Democrats on this list: Cardoza, Harman, Costa and Thompson. Not surprising. These are true friends of big business. The pro-people Democrats don't count these people among them.

11. Joe Baca : California's Biggest "Friend" Of Labor Voted For The Bill
How about Joe Baca from the Inland Empire in California? I know him. He's suppose to be the solid 100%friend of labor and working people, not a corporate whore .... or perhaps he really is.

Well, at least Howard Dean and Pelosi spoke out against this betrayal of society. Too bad I can't say the same about Harry Reid.

12. Link Please
Please provide the link to Howard Dean speaking out as DNC head on this legislation. I'll be pleased if he did since Dean has been very quite on Bush's appointments and legislation this year.

Thanks

I somehow don't think that aiming for our OWN guys is the best political gamesmanship. Unless, you know, you want to save the Republicans some money.

22. So now consumers are too stupid to maintain their own finances?
Remember, the original poster wasn't talking about, say, the lack of medical exemptions (which I disagree with), but instead consumers. And if you spend yourself into bankruptcy, I don't buy the "But...it was EASY credit...how could I have refused?" argument.

30. I would not be too hard on them....
Does anyone have a link to the exact terms of the bankruptcy bill?

I heard that it only makes bankruptcy harder for people who make over the mean income level in their state. If so, it seems fair, given that if you are making more than that, you should be able to afford to make payments on your debts.

Maybe I'm being naive, but it may make getting a loan easier since banks will be less likely to believe someone will claim bankruptcy on them.

I do think the timing of the bill is bad, though, given the fact that other matters that should have priority these days.
