Here is an email I just received from my youngest daughter. Lovely girl, hard worker, smart, got her act together but, alas, she is married to a freeper. (What can I say, you raise them the best ya can....good thing he is generally a nice guy and I can ignore his freeperism. And I keep trying to steer her back from the dark side one step at a time.)This email maybe a hoax but, real or not, thought it would be a good opportunity to teach her a little history.
Friday, April 15, 2005 11:36 AM Subject: Fw: Don't buy Pepsi in the new can... Don't Buy Pepsi In The New Can!!Pepsi Has A New Patriotic Can Coming Out With A Picture Of The Empire State Building, And The Pledge Of Allegiance On It. However, The Words "Under God" Are Omitted. Pepsi Said They Didn't Want To Offend Anyone. That Case, We Don't Want To Offend Anyone At The Pepsi Corporate Office Either. So, If We Don't Buy Any Pepsi Product, They Will Not Be Offended When They Don't Receive Our Money That Has The Words "In God We Trust" On It!!! How Fast Can You Forward This One?
And here is my reply - hope she forwards on -
Sorry, I will continue to buy Pepsi, maybe more, just to make a point.
The Pledge of Allegiance did not originally have the "under God" phrase in it. It was added during the 1950s when Joseph McCarthy and his "Red Scare" bunch of followers were trying to get people to testify against family, friends, co-workers, and acquaintances that they were "Red" Communists. There was this wild wave of patriotism that used fear as a means of controlling people. If you did not agree to rat out people then you were "blacklisted" and kept from working, you were shunned and people's lives and careers were ruined. McCarthy and his bunch were finally shown to be frauds (and using the scare for political purposes) and it was ended but not before a lot of harm was done to a lot of people. It was a campaign of you are "either with us or you are a communists." (A lot like today when people say you are either for the president or you are un-American - neither is true.
It is contrary to the Constitution, to what is right and what the freedoms this country was founded upon. You can be very much against one person and their policies and still very much love your country. Opposition to the ruling party is an American idea - after all that is exactly how we became a country to begin with - by overthrowing a king and demanding fair and equal freedom for ALL. Not just God fearing ones.
Pepsi has a right to want to reach out to all Americans not just religious drinkers. I am not offended by the words "under God" in the Pledge but do feel it is unnecessary and catering to a few people. We are not a nation of religions, we are a nation of people who are free to worship or not as they see fit and we do not need to chant the words for the privilege.
Love ya, just my two cents, have a super great weekend.
