How to argue that the troops should leave Iraq
I have to do a persuasive speech for my Public Speaking class. I've decided to argue that the troops should leave Iraq. Since it's only a 5-minute speech, I need to narrow my reasons down to 3 or 4. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do that and what reasons to pick? (Btw, my class is so conservative that even the Theater majors are Republicans).

1. My first question is...........
why did you chose such a Rethug college.

One big reason we should leave Iraq asap is because the longer the US stays the more resentment we're going to stir.

Maybe you should google some articles on how poorly the reconstruction is going and how basic services like and gas electricity are scarce.

3. Here are some of the best reasons:
Najwa Salman Aged 2 Female Gunfire el-Amin, nr. Baghdad 3-Aug-04

Firaz Benyamin or Ferase Jalous Aged 32 Male Burnt in car By St. Peter & St. Paul church, Baghdad 01-Aug-04 Christian

Danya Cholok, fiancee of Firaz Benyamin Aged 28 Female Burnt in car By St. Peter & St. Paul church, Baghdad 01-Aug-04

Leila Zechi Age Unknown Female Gunfire Latefiyah 23-Jul-04
Nada, daughter of Leila Age 6 Female Gunfire Latefiyah 23-Jul-04
Estrabaket, daughter of Leila Age 9 Female Gunfire Letefiyah 23-Jul-04

There are 3023 other names listed at the Iraq Body Count website.

The trouble with most "debates" about the war, is that they either overlook or depersonalize the deaths of civilians by reducing them to statistics.

It would be interesting to avoid the usual yadda-yadda and just read off the names, ages, sex, etc of the victims of our aggression, and see the reaction. Might not get you a great grade but it might make people think outside of their comfort zone.

“What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy.” - Gandhi

4. The "news" from Iraq is all good, they have a government now
(according to the "news") and they even have a president. They are on the road to democracy (according to the "news"), why do we need to be there any more?

Things are peachy in Iraq...then it's time to bring our men and women home!

5. Longer deploys, fewer troops, draft on the horizon
That should perk up those little republican ears.

7. Print out pictures of dead and injured Iraqi babies, glue them on a board
and you could have a wordless/silent speech. Seriously. Print out the pics and give their names. Do enough to fill 5 minutes. That will be easy to do...thousands have been killed. AND...print out pictures of our SOLDIERS and read their names to honor them. There's no better speech on why we should leave Iraq than those 2 points.

9. and I'm sure that anyone who still thinks we need to be there
after that would be willing to sign an enlistment form, then and there. Hand them out.

Shouldn't be hard to get every single one to put themselves on the line for their beliefs, right?

Maybe even hand them out first, along with a recruiter's business card and a glossy brochure. Tell them you will be collecting the completed forms at the end of your allotted time, for anyone who disagrees with your assessment.

Make it personal. Make it real. Go for the throat.
