What's with this commercial?? Anyone else see it?

So I am watching MSNBC right now. Keith Olbermann's rap up of the popes funeral. Commercials come on. Normally I mute them. I was busy reading the Gannon/Guckert/Gosch thread so I didn't. This random commercial comes on and it's little kids asking their parents what they should do in case of a terrorist attack. (Where would we meet, what should I do etc)
Has anyone else seen this? Does it feel like it just came out of no where? I've got that feeling they are going to start up with the raised levels etc. again. Diverting us from paying attention to- something big. Don't know what yet.

2. I saw the same thing a couple of weeks ago...

...and I felt the same way you did.

I was wondering why this came out of nowhere. I automatically began thinking, "Ok. What are they planning to do to us now?"

I was really disturbed by this commercial and I discussed it with my husband who shared my concerns.

It almost felt to me, like someone was sending out a message, so they could soon say, "We warned you. We warned you with those ads. We were prepared."

I wish I had some comforting words. It's hard with this lying, manipulative administration.

7. I saw that ad on tv too..

Can't remember if it was on CNN or BBC. Powerful stuff, huh? I hope it's effective at making people think outside their own comfortable world, but, I dunno - my experience is that it's very easy for most Americans to mentally close off those kind of thoughts or feelings as being irrelevant since it doesn't happen to them. Who knows though - maybe it will have a big impact. I hope so....

And being a parent - and a former "soccer parent" at that, it really hits you in the gut. Or at least it did me, and given that our lives living outside the US in a poor country are not nearly as sheltered as the average American's, I suppose I'm hoping that it would make an even bigger impression on someone who hadn't really been able to visualize the horror.

21. I Had the same reaction to the Soccer Game spot, I can't watch it again

Sorry to report, but, other than CNNInt, these U.N. spots have a snowball's chance in Hell of ever being shown on a main stream media (MSM) channels.

I don't know now long you've been out of the country, but the amount of Television "news" on the Cable "news" channels has dropped to around 5% news, 95% fluff. CNN/Headline News has even launched their new "Headline Prime" (8pm to 11pm) "Entertainment News." I guess 5 minutes of "news" headlines every 1/2 hour was just more than the Government would allow.

"The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" (Comedy Central), NPR, BBC and other foreign News, and the Internet are about the only News we can get in this country now.:argh:

25. I've lived overseas for 4 years

I missed almost all the Bush presidency -- I was kinda having mixed feelings about coming here (lots of family reasons) until Bush won the election in 2000, and then was so depressed at the idea of having to see his smirk on tv for the next four years that leaving sounded MUCH better!!

No doubt television news has really changed. I get all mine from BBC, because even from here I can see a difference in CNN's coverage. Major bummer for me is that where I live, I only get the Daily Show once a week!

5. I've heard many adds like this on AA, they're calling them Community

Services, I think.
I usually tune adds out, never really hearing the full message, but they do involve planing for 'somekind of unusual event'.
I think they may be for a phone company.

Insomniacs like me have seen it on very early morning TV for quite a while. I do find it disturbing on a number of levels and I am glad it seems to run at times that children are not likely to be watching. As a survivor of the "duck and cover" years I do not like to think of any more children having bad dreams over this stuff.

23. Here we go again - back to the bomb shelter days of the 50's

and 60's. Perhaps nationally these commercials are in poor taste. Attention at the community level where special attention can be given to isolated cases.

in the 9-11 commission report they said that the WTC employees began having safety drills after the 1994 attack, and that these simple, stupid safety drills kept the employees calm and enabled them to evacuate the towers in a non-chaotic manner.

26. It's actually a Public Service Announcement (PSA) not an ad.

Stations used to be required to run a certain number of PSA's, but I don't think they have to anymore.

Now days, they stick in PSA's when they have an empty slot where a commercial, or ad, would go.

This looks like one from the Ad Council, which was started in the days of mandatory PSA's. Funded by advertisers and broadcasters, they produced the PSA's so the stations wouldn't have to and distribute them (I believe) free. All on a wide range of topics.

Many times, stations will edit on or super their own id's to "brand" them.

I don't debate the need for www.ready.gov in any way. But using the children to make the spot? Odd. It was reminiscent of PSA's about house fires. (Where would we meet? What should I do? etc) But since theres only been 1 day of terror in our country in the last few years(at least that they admit to) it seems odd that they have this big push for these commercials,which I have now seen two more times.
