Monaco's Princess Caroline's husband 'in a coma'
Telegraph
(Filed: 08/04/2005)

The husband of Princess Caroline of Monaco has slipped into a coma just days after her father Prince Rainier died, a palace source has said.

Prince Ernst August of Hanover, 51, was admitted to a Monaco hospital on Monday with pancreas pains and has been in a coma since the following evening, the source added.

German Prince Ernst August of Hanover and Princess Caroline
The palace itself declined comment.

Prince Rainier III, Europe's longest-serving monarch died on Wednesday at the age of 81 after lung, heart and kidney problems.

Or am I confusing them with another set of obscure royals (not the Brits) ... ??

4. No, they certainly aren't
lucky in that respect. And poor Caroline has already suffered the death of one husband, her first husband who was killed in a water racing accident in the 80's; that really devastated her for a long time. I'm sorry to see she's having to go through it again, especially just after the death of her father.

18. This is her " third " husband .
Her first husband was a playboy , many years her senior . The Roman Catholic Church had this marriage annulled . Her second husband , Casiraghi , an Italian industrialist , died in a freak speed boat accident . This is her third marriage , the one to Prince Ernst August . She is now Princess Caroline of Hannover now .

33. Official Title
Actually, I believe her official title is HRH The Princess of Hanover.

Incidentally, if Great Britain had Salic Law -- which means that only males inherit and there was no Royal Marriages Act -- which prohibits anyone in the line of succession from marrying a Catholic -- Ernst August and Caroline would be King and Queen of the United Kingdom. In fact, the Hanovers still consider themselves to be "Prince(sses) of Great Britain and Ireland"

11. Me & Mine once had a goddawful encounter with this scion of
Hanover. In Paris in the bar of our hotel, Ernst was pissed as a fart and demanded a private booth for him and his entourage to drink in.

He walked up to where we were sitting drinking our anniversary champagne and told us to F*** Off from his reserved banquette.

This did not go down well with my better half who summoned the cops because Ernst was spitting and fell over, smashing our bottle of Crystal onto the ground.....

Cops eventually came after Ernst continued his fracas with the bar manager who'd been sent to deal with the mess..........

Don't know what happened to him next, but we did get a complimentary replacement of our bubbly...and a profuse apology.

36. It was after
her second husband died.

The first one was that playboy, Junot, I think his name was, and it lasted only a couple of years.

The second one died in a speedboat accident. She has three kids with him, and, yes, the daughter is her clone! The sons look just like their father, who was a blonde, blue-eyed northern Italian, also a bit of a playboy.

This third guy, I remember reading that she busted up his marriage to some other princess. I have no idea why.

The hair thing was reported to be stress-related after the shocking death of her second husband.

(I hate myself for knowing stuff like this.)

He's not a prince
None of Caroline's three oldest children -- Andrea, Charlotte, and Pierre -- have the title of Prince or Princess. Her younger daughter Alexandra is a Princess since her father is a Prince. However, if Albert does not have his own children to inherit, Andrea will one day be the Prince of Monaco. But he's not a Prince yet.

Also, if Caroline were to succeed her brother -- she's currently next in line -- then I believe her children would be Prince(s) and Princess of Monaco although I'm not completely sure about that.

61. The children would not be princes or princesses
even if Caroline takes the throne. If Andrea or Pierre or Charlotte were to take the throne after her, then they would be a Prince or Princess of Monaco.

They are a technically a "princely family."

Caroline is Her Royal Highness, The Princess of Hanover. She was, formerly, Her Serene Highness, Princess Caroline of Monaco.

HRH outranks HSH.

55. You're right, apparently.
There was a photo of Prince Ernst in some tabloid a few years ago. I believe it was shortly after they became an "item". Princess Caroline was already pregnant with her 4th child when they decided to get married.

Interesting thing is, Prince Ernst was already married to a french woman named Chloe, and she was good friends with Caroline. So Chloe accused Caroline of being a husband-robber. The previous couple already had several kids.

Chloe hopefully did not mourn too long. Prince Ernst has a long history of non-stop drinking. He's been called "a pig" by innocent bystanders. A few years ago, he peed on some public statue and made a spectacle of himself. I think there was a story about him hitting someone over the head with a bottle. In other words, real AA material, here. Also, a co-dependent Al-anon family system which perpetuates this sick behaviour.

Princess Grace always regretted that none of her kids had married into royalty. Like the old-fashioned ways in Europe, when kings and queens married each other to consolidate kingdoms and power.

Looks like Grace got her wish, after all. Caroline married into royalty, unlike her youngest daughter who ran off with a circus performer, lays on the beach topless in Monaco, and so on.

Interesting family.

101. I know that; the post I was
responding to was referring to Camilla being a "peasant" and not royalty.

I agree with the previous poster. This family has some seriously bad luck it seems.

my mother lost both her husband (my dad) and her mother. It is an extreme strain, especially if the parent was the only surviving parent.

Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 11:13 AM by lebkuchen
Don't recall where, but she had bodyguards with her, got drunk, and pass out at the bar in "party-girl" fashion.

It's got to be difficult on the psyche when you're set for life and have no where to go but down. Ultimately, I think it's part of human nature to need to struggle to achieve. I think this family missed that opportunity.

Maybe that's why the Pope rests in peace.

41. I don't think this family missed that opportunity at all .
Put Stephanie aside . Albert II is involved in many charities around the world , including being a member of the IOC and is also an Olympian . Caroline , despite the obstacles that have come up in her life , is raising 4 children who are turning out well despite having the entire world at their feet . I don't think any opportunities have been missed . No family is perfect but I don't think they are dysfunctional as the gossip media makes them either .

The "drama du jour" family, as per the front page of any magazine seen at the world's checkout counter, the sum (total) of what anybody thinks they know about them.

99. Apparently Princess Grace had quite a drinking problem in
her later years, maybe Stephanie has inherited the gene and Caroline became the Co-dependent one.

It sounds like a typical Alcoholic family system.

102. Very true.
Alcoholism is a family illness. We inherit these traits from our ancestors. Sometimes the disease of alcoholism can skip a generation and the grandchildren show symptoms of the disease.

According to John Bradshaw, families often show the symptoms according to the birth order of the children. After studying thousands of alcoholic families, they've come to certain conclusions about them.

For example, the oldest child rarely becomes an alcoholic. If they have grown up with alcoholism, they often become rigid, autocratic, often fundamentalist religious. The youngest child, on the other hand, has the biggest risk of becoming an alcoholic.

There are other roles that the children play, such as the troublemaker, the enabler, the perfect child, the entertainer, the focus of the family's anger, and so on. Incredibly intersting stuff, considering that most families have an alcoholic somewhere.

40. When mom looks like that, you have at least a 50/50
chance of being a stunner.

Gawd, Grace was one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood in her "It Takes A Thief" days. Also, one of the least inhibited, I hear. That may be in the genes, as well.

There is a press agreement not to photograph her smoking.

She also won a suit in a German court which prevents the paprazzi from photographing her and her children in public places in the EU and in GB.
