Neil Steinberg: The fundies must be hating media treatment of JPII
The usually perceptive Mr. Steinberg in yesterday's Chicago Sun-Times:

http://www.suntimes.com/index/steinberg.html

"By now, you might find yourself a tad weary as we near the end of the first week of the all-pope, all-the-time media marathon. But imagine how this intensive, adoring attention is going down in deeply fundamentalist parts of this country. They hate the media as it is -- cynical, godless, sex-drenched, institution-wrecking liberals who inevitably mock righteous evangelical leaders, dismissing them as so many kooks and zealots. But let the bespangled, Romanish pope die, and suddenly the cynicism stills, the air grows quiet, and there is the media, awestruck, dazzled, a scarf on its head, genuflecting before the golden throne, hands clasped, murmuring reverently. It has to gall them."

I thought that there was a trendiness of catholicism in fundie land, but he may have a point. What does a fundie think is worse than a media hostile to religion? A media that isn't hostile to a bunch of popey furriners.
