The Faith Based Fraud, A Local Example

http://www.eyeonwisconsin.com/blog/_archives/2005/4/6/557005.html

David Kuo, former deputy director of the Office of Faith-Based Initiatives wrote a story recently regarding his job and things that troubled him while working in the Bush Administration. Kuo makes many points in his piece but one comment stood out to this progressive. Kuo recounts how the Bush Administration held conferences in battleground states to teach faith based groups and churches how to interact with the government. These conferences were held from 2002 to 2004 and brought in more than 15,000 people. David Kuo tells of one senior Republican leader walking into an early conference and saying to Kuo, "This is what Republicans have been dreaming about for 30 years."

After reading David Kuo’s story, I seemed to recall an article in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel entitled “The Daniels Factor”. The October 18th article discussed the fact that Sedgwick Daniels, pastor of Holy Redeemer Institutional Church of God in Christ, not only endorsed George Bush for president but also was a delegate at the GOP convention. This seemed strange because the same article said that Sedgwick had twice supported Bill Clinton and was a personal friend of Jesse Jackson. Hattie Daniels-Rush, Sedgwick’s sister, was also a delegate to the GOP convention. In a September 3, 2004 article in the Chicago Tribune, Hattie is said to have always been a Democratic “go-to person” as recently as three years ago (2001). These things did not seem consistent or logical so I wondered to myself if there were other reasons that Sedgwick and his sister may have made such a drastic change. It was at that time that I decided to investigate this issue further. This exclusive Eye On Wisconsin report is the result of that investigation.

A Time Line of Events

-snip-

Does the above sequence of events not seem suspicious to anyone else? Why has no one in the mainstream media questioned the Daniels political about face just in time for their big payout? The NAACP’s tax exempt status has been threatened for criticizing Bush but Sedgwick Daniels is allowed to wear his pastoral robe on a flyer and make a blatant appeal for Bush? Something is clearly wrong with this situation. Unfortunately, the more investigation that was done, the more that additional questions surfaced. Perhaps this report will at least help us begin the process of addressing these issues. That is the purpose of this report. It is not an attack on Holy Redeemer as a church or on it’s people who have done much for this community. This is part of the problem with churches accepting public dollars, you face public accountability.
