...being against any rules. It was simply a matter of it being, as you say, slimy. It was an open admission that the whole Schiavo affair was being used for political gain. That isn't the kind of thing anyone would want to own up to, even if they hadn't broken any rules. It's just slimy on it's face.

11. His aide resigned
http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/04/07/schiavo.memo.ap/index.html
<snip>
Martinez, R-Florida, said in a written statement that he discovered Wednesday that the memo had been written by an aide in his office.

"It is with profound disappointment and regret that I learned today that a senior member of my staff was unilaterally responsible for this document," Martinez said.

He said he accepted the resignation of the staffer who drafted and circulated the memo. "This type of behavior and sentiment will not be tolerated in my office," he said.

Martinez did not identify the aide, but The Washington Post said he was the senator's legal counsel, Brian Darling.

It's hilarious that Martinez "had no knowledge" of the doc, but >
just happened to have it in his pocket, mistakenly handing it to Tom Harken.

Too funny!

Author of Schiavo memo steps forward
Sen. Martinez accepts senior aide’s resignationBy Mike Allen

Updated: 11:33 p.m. ET April 6, 2005The legal counsel to Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) admitted yesterday that he was the author of a memo citing the political advantage to Republicans of intervening in the case of Terri Schiavo, the senator said in an interview last night.

Brian Darling, a former lobbyist for the Alexander Strategy Group on gun rights and other issues, offered his resignation and it was immediately accepted, Martinez said.

Martinez said he earlier had been assured by aides that his office had nothing to do with producing the memo. "I never did an investigation, as such," he said. "I just took it for granted that we wouldn't be that stupid. It was never my intention to in any way politicize this issue."

17. Here's an interesting bit of intel from MyDD:
Now that Brian Darling of the Alexander Strategy Group has been penned as the author, it connects the dots to why Tom DeLay also used the talking points. The Alexander Strategy Group is a firm created by former DeLay chief of staff Ed Buckham (and yet another place from where DeLay's wife has cashed checks). Tom DeLay used the talking points at least on three occasions...

Counsel to GOP Senator Wrote Memo On Schiavo
Martinez Aide Who Cited Upside For Party Resigns

By Mike Allen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, April 7, 2005; Page A01
The legal counsel to Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) admitted yesterday that he was the author of a memo citing the political advantage to Republicans of intervening in the case of Terri Schiavo, the senator said in an interview last night.

Brian H. Darling, 39, a former lobbyist for the Alexander Strategy Group on gun rights and other issues, offered his resignation and it was immediately accepted, Martinez said.
Anyone want a good laugh? One of the biggest propagators of the "Schiavo memo's a forgery" is Powerlie... er, Powerline blogger "Hindrocket" (more appropriately, "Assrocket"), whose real name is John Hinderaker and whose full-time job is as an overpriced attoprney, who was supposed to appear this previous Sunday on Howie Kurtz's Reprehensible Sources on CNN. He was whining somewhere earlier this week about how the Pope's death preempted his appearance.

Hinderaker and WaPo's Kurtz were out to discredit WaPo's Mike Allen. I hope Mike Allen throttles Reliable Whore Howie...

30. Kurtz's "Reprehensible Sources." A good one!
:D It's interesting when WaPo has infighting amongst reporters, isn't it. Howie's wife is running him hard. The one that's the Repug Lobbyist. Pretty soon he won't have any credibility left.
