Cobenais (Red Lake survivor) - making ‘miraculous’ recovery

"FARGO, N.D. - A MeritCare doctor calls it “almost miraculous” that a Red Lake student shot in the head can now say a few words and eat a little Jell-O.

“This boy was on the verge of death … and now things are turning around,” Dr. Alex Mendez, a neurosurgeon, said Tuesday at a press conference.

Steven Cobenais, 15, was upgraded from critical to serious condition after his progress over the weekend.

The teen arrived at Fargo’s MeritCare Hospital 16 days ago, after fellow Red Lake student Jeff Weise, 16, went on a shooting spree that left 10 people dead and seven injured."

...

"This isn't just a scientific miracle," Mendez said. "We've done just the basics. There's something more here."

* Family and friends of Red Lake shooting victim Steven Cobenais have set up a fund to help pay for his hospital care.

Cobenais is in critical condition in the pediatric intensive care unit at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo.

Donations can be sent to the Steve Cobenais Fund, Deerwood Bank, P.O. Box 1278, Bemidji, MN 56601.
