I think I have hit the point of hysteria
After the election, the fraud, the deficit, the war, the deaths, the deceit, the lies, global warming, peak oil, gas prices, Terri Schiavo, the Pope--non-stop gloom and doom, I have officially hit the point of can't stop laughing maniacally.
Please make me stop.

On second thought--there is a good point. At least Prince Ranier had the decency to pass during this so we won't listen to that next week, and hopefully Charles and Horseface will officially wed this weekend so that will be done with.

2. Go on a news blackout
It's what I do when things get really gruesome. A couple of days, even a few hours, away from the news helps one's perspective.

Either that, or a scotch and soda. :)

8. I did a news blackout on the first anniversary of 9-11, and I
encouraged one of my sensitive friends to do the same.

Since my mother-in-law got a little messed up in the head over 9-11 (like PTSD) and starting fighting with anyone who would argue with her, I encouraged my father-in-law to take her for a long drive that day, and if she wouldn't go, disconnect their cable to keep her away from all the gloomy shit on tv.

17. That's what I do
I just watch the Daily show and listen to AAR and come here. If you want some real democracy catch "West Wing" and have a marathon or something (you can now buy season one through four on dvd). I just ignore everything on MSM and get the news from those sources.

I tend to look on everything that is happening these days with extreme irony.

Be well. I appreciate your knowledge and wisdom.

6. I am in solidarity with you.
The TV news is simply amazing. Its like an alternate universe. So removed from everyone elses normal reality.

Im befuddled. I really am. And reconsidering relocating from the US. Seriously, its that demoralizing.

10. horseface?
hey the guy is extremely rich, powerful, famous, and a prince to boot--he could get anyone he wants.

I kind of like the fact that he did not choose a 20 something bimbo. (a la Tump--who keeps getting younger and hotter models). As a man, I do NOT go strictly by looks and I think it is demeaning to women when men do so.

I understand your frustration with the news lately--but I have to admit that the "horseface" comment offended me on behalf of the ladies of DU--women who deserve to have men be interested in their intelligence, kindness and personalities--no matter what they look like.

-I am a sensitive DU kind of a man!

12. Thank you!
I was raised by a great mother, grandmother and two big sisters.

They made a big impact on me. I remember one time a friend came home from school with me--and we were talking about girls--he called this one a "dog". Well my big sis let both him and me know that that kind of talk was unacceptable in my family!

I have never tolerated it since. and they taught me to see the beauty in any woman.

14. I understand--but I always feel the need
to speak up on behalf of the ladies anyway.

What the world needs is more men who love ladies who look natural--and less women who punish themselves to be accepted by our societies narrow definitions of beauty (through plastic surgery, diets, etc.)

no offense meant to you personally--just that I hate that kind of terminology. It disempowers women.

Bigotry is a pretty heavy accusation and I hardly think it applies.

24. Maybe it is too heavy . .
But it demeans someone who can't defend them self. And you are attacking something about them they can't help - similar to skin color or sexual orientation.

I just react viscerally whenever that happens around here.

25. On that note
I am going to "lol" and go to bed after I say that that statement is more condescending to women than anything I could have said.
Women do not need "protectors", they can take care of themselves.
Very sexist.

26. hmmm I also speak up when someone
tells a racist joke or says something offensive--I suppose that is wrong too?

I don't mean to imply that I make decisions for any woman or any of that old fashioned stuff--but I do speak up on their behalf and I also try to encourage and empower the women in my life to be strong. I have found that many woman do NOT know what it is like to speak up for themselves--sometimes they are apologetic or seem to be guilty about taking care of themselves.

Getting male support is still a very important thing for women. You may not appreciate it--and you may be one of the lucky women who does not need support--but I still like to provide it.

My current girlfriend is in graduate school because I encouraged her--she did not have confidence to pursue her dreams until I came into her life. When we first started dating, she was always apologizing when she had done nothing wrong. Now she has much more confidence. And no--I do not run her life--I try to give her the courage and confidence to do whatever SHE wants.

Don't try to make me into a male chavinist pig. I definitely am not that. (BTW I do ALL the cooking and 50% or more of the cleaning)
