People won't let it alone because JP2 is being *worshiped*....
in the MSM, similar to the way Reagan was whitewashed a few months ago. More so, actually. This site is supposed to be a refuge from that crap, or so I thought.

On one level, I feel the ( to me, irrational and misdirected) feelings of JP's admirers on DU should be respected with a moratorium of a day or two. But JP and his legacy are currently all over the media. And a one-sided,incomplete and inaccurate account of his papacy is being relentlessly pounded in to the collective noggin of the American people.

So... how's the weather where you are?

3. Don't you know it's law
One cannot speak bad, i.e truthful, about the Christian religion.

Oh wait, we repealed those laws, well some people are upset that happened.

8. People are upset to see uneducated bashing and bigotry
They expect more from liberals. We leave that kind of thing to Freepers. If people act like Freepers on this website, I'll be happy to call them on it.

4. He's being *worshipped* in my neighborhood and town, too.
It's wild.

Its just not on TV, its like my neighbors are all talking about it and stuff.

You should have seen my parish. It was packed. I can't imagine tomorrow morning's mass.

Crazy.

Cold is the weather. Cold tonight.

5. I've been disgusted by much of DU today.
I can't believe the number of "tsk, tskers" who expect everyone to shut up and bow their heads and go along with the flock and not point out that this man did a serious amount of harm to this planet (and yes, some good as well).

9. Remember he spoke up for the poor & needy
That's more than you've seen any Republican do so in decades. He was also 100% against the Iraq invasion. When was the last time the Bushies bragged about "shock and awe" against a third world country who never had the ability to harm us?

12. I don't dispute that.
What I take issue with is that when people point out the flip side of the coin (as we would expect on a liberal board -- and also on a political board -- the pope was indeed a political figure as well as a religious one) they are told to shut up, mind their manners, and stop "Catholic bashing."

13. Did he really speak up meaningfully for the poor?
I'll give him credit for trying to stop the Iraq aggression. ( But why not forbid catholics to participate in it? Might have actually put the kibosh on it.And might not this failure been interpreted as a tacit "go-ahead"?)

The poor and needy: early in his papacy ... correct me if I'm wrong (I'm not, actually)... did he not speak to a convocation of Latin American Bishops and tongue-lash them for supporting political efforts to improve the status of the poor in those highly socially and economically-stratified societies? Did he not say something to the effect that the have-nots should be like Christ... "content with the simple joys of the poor." If memory serves, the bishops hissed. Audibly hissed.

Better to talk about the poor than to do something for them, seems to be the message there.

25. The majority of the world's poor are women and children
Edited on Sun Apr-03-05 07:25 AM by theHandpuppet
To think what he COULD HAVE done to really help the poor by standing up for women and girls as equals in God's eyes and promoting their full participation in society rather than promoting their segregation as inherently inferior and servile incubators! Allowing women of faith access to birth control and some right to divorce would have been a good place to start; it is obvious, however, from the sea of all-male faces in the Catholic heirarchy that the continued suppression of half the world's population will continue as usual, including and especially the poor.

Edited to add: Overcast, cool and VERY windy. Sunshine and warmer weather expected tomorrow. Did everyone remember to change their clocks?

17. "100% against the Iraq invasion"?
I'd say more like 12%.

A little lip service and a shiny medal does not make for leadership.

Or you could start a post that will become a flame fest. I see you choose the latter. Now that's a post that deserves to be called 'crap'.

19. Boss... can I call you Boss? ....
"Boss Tweed" was a famous political figure in the city where I reside.
Never mind.

So far, yours is the only response to my post that resembles a "flame" either in tone or in content. There are about a dozen comments. Mostly skeptical of JP , several that appear to be sympathetic. This is worth thinking about.

The "analysis" such as is is, was provided. I was analyzing why people won't let the issue go.

I think it's self explanatory. Lemme know if I can 'splain further.

You can define "crap" for me, if you like.

11. Its tradition. people must mourn for TEN DAYS!
If I have to watch the Pope this and the Pope that for ten days, there gonna be a bullet in my tv set.

I have nothing against the Pope. I have even posted my personal thoughs about him in one of the other many threads, I have even gone so far as to disuade others from posting overly negative comments. But after about 24 hours, if this Pope buisiness isn't done dominating the tv, radio and forums, I'm gonna get testy. I'm not in the mood for another 2 week death-a-thon.

15. Discord... remember: one does not HAVE to watch it.....
One reason I come here is cause I can't stand TV news... even when it's not about the Pope, Reagan, Bush. I get a dose here, a dose there. That's enough. Just enough to get a sense of where it's going. Doesn't take long.

Be prepared: it's gonna be more than 24 hrs.

I'm more worried about the "legacy" such uncritical "analysis" leaves in its wake. There trying to put Reagan on a *coin*, fercryinoutloud.

23. Not insignificant, that's for sure.
Not much mention of this in the coverage I've seen. (Actually none at all, truth be told).

One quote from CBS special on about 1 hr. ago: "There is no place in the church for those who harm the young."

Calling gay kids "intrinsically disordered" is not harmful? Failing to educate, *actively* the heterosexual faithful on the human rights of sexual minorities ( instead of paying lip service to same, which is what he seemed to have done, prior to unleashing the "intrinsically disordered", and "culture of evil" rhetoric.
