I've been waiting for something to happen. Recall that weapons dump at Al-Qaqaa which the US stupidly neglected to take care of. I forget how much, but I believe it was 3 TONS of explosive material which could be used against US troops....and it is.

Now watch for stories about bombs exploding either inside or outside the prison, and we'll know what the source was.

Old farts die every day. Take Frank Perdue, for instance.

31. The Pope is an international leader. He is not an "ordinary "
"old fart" . I don't agree with him on many things but he was a peacemaker. This is international news being covered around the world. I argued on another post that this could be used to Democratic advantage. While I understand some feel it would be in poor tast and I do respect the Pope, the other side will use this to their advantage. But this isn't just "obstuctionist conspiracy". This is the passing of a world leader.

It sounds like it was kept from freeing any prisoners which I'm sure was the goal. Lucky because if the defenses were overwhelmed, it would have led to thousands freed and a bloodbath of the guards and probably lots of prisoners too.

How could 40-60 insurgents inflict 20 casualities? Unless the prison itself isn't well-guarded with regulars, and we're seeing more NG and AR units slaughtered - again.

Must be some heavy firepower being employed - probably the stuff they got from the unguarded dumps. This is such a fuck-up.

Slow on both this AND the pope. Gun Shy as they reported it yesterday and Miles had to suck it up, take one for the team and retract. The excuse if I remember it correctly was somthing like:

"These things just can't be avioded in live television."

Hell yes they can. MSNBC is kicking your scrawney old asses (on todays horseraces anyway). The didn't report the Pope yesterday and they broke the attack today.

89. That would be surprising, esp. considering this:
"Witnesses said the second car bomb was detonated against U.S. forces as they were trying to evacuate casualties from the first car bomb blast."

The military usually lowballs the casualty estimates for as long as possible. This article didn't mention deaths one way or another, but I'm afraid that believing there will be no US deaths resulting from this attack is a bit too optimistic.

62. What frightens me about this attack is the level of planning involved.
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 03:37 PM by Lone_Star_Dem
I don't doubt that the prison, being what it is, was very heavily fortified. Yet, they still managed a successful attack with two truck bombs, 40 mortars and a successful ground assault. This implies they've either been training, or were already trained insurgents (former military?).

I worry it's the beginning of more organized resistance.

64. I have to say it
You abuse people as you occupy their country to steal their resources and get Christian religious jollies off,When you rape them, starve them, kill the adults, kill the kids and women, beat them senseless or to death when they are tied up and helpless,no threat to you,When you make them eat rotting food, humiliate them, and the higher ups than the jerks doing the beatings tell the soldier fools to beat them rape them humiliate them and teach the torture techniques too..and the white house says by it's actions,we'll slap your wrist and cover up the crime just do it,...

What other recourse do these Iraqis have?

I am ashamed of our government.

I am disappointed in our people.

What happens"over there" can come back to haunt us,,CIA calls it blow back.
Bush the ghoul dictator calls it his chance to instigate the desperate to strike back, but they won't get bush or the rich rulers making the game that hurts the Iraqis and desperate peoples ,they'll kill American citizens, than in the hysteria Bush or his handlers can dupe America maybe even the world into accepting martial law.Globalism.

And the pope croak serves the ones who want control so perfectly.

90. Dahr Jamail on the resistance
and why it doesn't have a hard time recruiting:

"MEANWHILE, ONE of the things missing from the U.S. media is reporting on the increasingly frequent bombing of Iraq by the U.S.

THAT'S A very important point. It definitely is one of the most underreported things in Iraq. Daily, there are many, many air missions being flown, and huge amounts of bombs being dropped. In fact, the vast majority of Iraqi civilians killed have died as a result of U.S. warplanes dropping bombs."

http://electroniciraq.net/news/1917.shtml

Sy Hersh also stressed this in an interview - the increasingly numerous daily bombing raids that go unreported by any media.

Baghdad - Insurgents detonated car bombs and fired rocket propelled grenades at the Abu Ghraib prison, injuring 44 U.S. forces after a period of declining attacks that had raised hopes the insurgency might be weakening. Lawmakers cast votes for parliament speaker Sunday in a session aimed at ending a deadlock.

A bit more:
-Snip-
Late Saturday, dozens of insurgents attacked the infamous Abu Ghraib prison, resulting in a clash that lasted about 40 minutes, 1st Lt. Adam Rondeau said. He added that it was unclear if the clash was aimed at helping prisoners escape, although the militants were unable to penetrate the prison's walls and no detainees were set free.

"This was obviously a very well-organized attack and a very big attack," Rondeau said.

On Sunday, U.S. military officials raised the casualty toll from 20 to 44 U.S. soldiers and Marines wounded. Officials said 13 prisoners were also injured.

105. My feeling on why the insurgents haven't been attacking lately
is that they're busy tunneling under the green zone and other key targets, filling the tunnels with looted bunker goodies. Lesson learned from how easy it was at the S. Iraq prison.
