Laura Bush brings "Cookie Diplomacy" to Afghanistan
March 31, 2005 -- WASHINGTON — Wearing a native shawl, First Lady Laura Bush yesterday spent several hours in Afghanistan, where she met women training to be teachers, helped plant a tree, and presented gifts to shy children.

...snip...

She went to a Kabul bakery where she stuffed a big box full of cookies, paid $1 and pronounced it a "good deal."

...snip...

It was a trip where Laura Bush acted as if she was just as safe as if she'd been out in Iowa — where her husband spent the day.

"I knew we'd be safe. Afghanistan is safe. There are certainly parts of it that aren't right now. But in general, I think it is a very safe place to travel," Mrs. Bush told reporters on her plane as she flew home after just six hours on the ground.

3. "several hours" in afghanistan - she must really care about them....
Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 02:39 PM by fryguy
and how insane for pickels to marvel at the safety in afghanistan. considering she was there with layers upon layers of security personnel keeping tabs on everything around her....given that, any place she visited would seem "safe" to her.....

Why not say "Let them eat cake." while you're at it????

10. Oh I think they're perfect for each other. She's a silly bimbo
trying to come across as motherly.

He's a foolish egomaniac trying to come across as tough.

Ike and Tina started out that way, but they split and learned better.

Laura and * aren't as violent (with each other, I'm talking about), but they're stuck in this relationship mode.

considered incredibly disrespectful to their culture for a woman to appear without a head covering????

15. Reminds me of when Hillary said for the nation not to expect
her to stay home and bake cookies. What a contrast in women...one a powerhouse in her own right as a leader in our country, the other a programmed drone. Laura certainly doesn't weigh herself down with deep issues, does she...how is she going to solve gang violence? When will first ladies not be expected to be dim pollyannas?

16. Hashish cookies?
Long ago, Afghanistan was known as a source for fine hash. The opium poppy is more profitable now, but I'll bet a few oldtimers still grow the good stuff...

22. My rant on Laura Bush
she spent a few minutes as a librarian...just kicking back until Prince Charming with a trust fund came along to rescue her. Now, she's lauded as an "educator". No. My mother taught in the public schools for 30 years. She was an educator. My mother-in-law taught in the public schools for over 40 years and still substitute teaches...at age 83. She's an educator. But Laura reading children's books for a photo op. does not make her an educator. Her hubby keeps citing her as an authority on education. Really? Like there aren't thousands of teachers who have decades of classroom experience. And we're all supposed to listen to Laura's words of wisdom. She's probably a nice lady. Just quit referring to her as an "educator". She's primarily a lady who lunches who got a degree in order to be a properly educated wife to a wealthy man. Fine. Quit holding her up as an expert. Unless you're talking about what to serve for lunch.
