What's it gonna take to fill the streets for the Environment?
Hundreds of thousands have marched against War. What will it take to put millions in the streets because of the Death of Mother Earth? As important as Peace is, the lack of a livable planet is more important. The recent and ongoing horrendous news about the state of our habitat is appalling but where is the uproar and outrage? What about Europe? They seem out front on this. Why are they not marching and pointing a finger at the U.S., Australia, and other developed offenders? What will it take? Are we just all going to lie down and let the ooze cover us? I am ready to hit the streets. The PEOPLE are the ones who can save the planet. Your thoughts.........

2. I'm with you...
I'm proud to be a "tree-hugger". I've participated in GMO protests and some of Earth First's direct actions.

6. Thanks! I know there are millions out there that care. It is just
frustrating to see our Earth dying and so many other stories covering up the awful truth. There are probably billions of people who are already physically suffering because of environmental degradation. They need a voice. There are people suffering because they can no longer look forward to a livelihood because the Earth's resources are being so depleted. They need a voice. Where are the leaders who are truly progressive and devoted to saving our species? If the Earth dies, we will all soon follow. I realize that speaking TRUTH is political suicide in this country/culture but TRUTH must be spoken to warn the masses. The masses can make a difference but they need a voice. A wealthy individual with an environmental conscience must step in and intercede for Mother Earth. As another poster suggested, it IS a right to life issue! Thanks again.

8. Fortunately, there is a growing movement among fundies and others
to save God's creation. It CAN be framed that way, for sure. We need voices who speak to those people, as well. It can be pointed out that God made a covenant with Noah and will ALL THE ANIMALS IN THE ARK after the flood (as found in Genesis). There is much other material in the Bible to support care for the natural world. We must refuse the temptation to only criticize the Religious world. We need them, too. This issue is the ultimate golden rule issue and the ultimate Love thy Neighbor issue.

The focus must be changed from just bringing down an administration because of War and other issues. I am wholeheartedly for that, of course. But the focus needs to shift to bringing down the global corporate parasites that are destroying the only Earth we have. This can interest everyone and it will.....if we have VOICES in high and wealthy places getting out the message and raising the grass roots until all of that grass overgrows the corporate junkyard that is being foisted on the world. Power to the People! Power to the Earth! Earth first!

15. Christians generally torture and kill animals.
At least they do around here anyway. Most fundies I know have an arsenal of weapons at home, and are hunters / trappers. One fundie actually answers "free kitten" ads and takes the entire litter so he can feed them alive to his hunting dogs to get them in shape. They usually claim that gawd gave em "dominion" over those "soul-less" creatures who experience no emotion.

Christians are generally not your friend when discussing the ethical treatment of animals, or environmental concerns. Most tend to be conservative, and a large portion of those believe that "global warming" is a bogus problem.

You need to trust the future of the planet to all those "gawdless, baby killing liberals" out there who do other insane things like oppose the bushtapo's war in Iraq.

4. Nominate for best question of the day
taking into account all other possible questions. There is a huge problem in that we are so completely eviscerated from the earth that we see little connection between our daily lives and the destruction. Everybody is on a cell phone. Not many know how to save seeds. Not many are willing to give up their toys.

And then their is the elephant in the room, the US military which is the worlds greatest polluter-go to www.warresisters.org and click on pamphlets and then download the leaflet Superpower-Superpolluter to see details and pass out leaflets.

We exist in the framework of the economy and culture of omnicide and it is distanced from our immediate functions. But I'll be there wherever and whenever.

Hope your post and idea gets some traction but Schiavo just died and I'm afraid the NOISE will blot out your truth as the jets blot out the sun.

5. Put money into renewables...
it makes everyone listen. And keep pushing the story, it should also be a large part of the Dem platform, along with the economic benefits it will entail.

7. kinda hard to save the environment
Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 11:10 AM by chickenscratching
when a bunch of fundies think Armageddon is coming.
:eyes:
sheesh, i hear you loud and clear theophilus, the people are the ones that can save the earth. how hard would it be for us to even make small changes?! i don't expect everyone to all of a sudden to follow every rule in regards to our treatment of Mother Earth right away, but it'd be nice to even see an itty bitty change.
but i guess the environment has never been on the top of our list....sigh...
and lastly, i think we have to tackle this issue into an issue that is acceptable to the right. i shouldn't have to get smirks and sneers, comments like 'bleeding heart liberal' or 'fucking tree hugger'
when i bring up the environment.

10. I agree. It is a tough nut to crack here in America. There are ways
to fight this, though. I think that the number who actually WANT to cause the end times is small. There are people being hurt right now by environmental degradation. Greed is the motivation and Christians, fundy or otherwise, know that that is a bad thing (or they should!). The end times have been expected for 2000 years by certain followers of Christ. Jesus himself said that no Man and not even He Himself knew when the end would be. He also said that it would take everyone pretty much by surprise. This says that the Doom sayers now are probably wrong. I say that Mankind won't get off that easily. There are just so many arguments that can be put forth to contradict these shortsighted and ignorant folks. We just need voices! Thanks for your thoughts, I totally agree.

9. I've just woken up to this topic
and I agree it should be first and foremost
on everyone's minds. It's the concern that
can bring the whole world together. I am
trying to read books and articles on sustainable
world and will be much more conscious of what
I buy and where, what resources I and my family use
etc.

I think we just have to wake up and how you
do that to a lot of people, I don't know. A
march doesn't seem to do it.

17. I have often felt that the political lines should be drawn
between the rights of the capitalists (and capitalism in general) and the rights of the rest of us including people of all religons, races, sexual persuasions, and the rights of all living creatures along with the planet.

This is where the battle rages. Capitalists want to destroy the earth and enslave the rest with minimum wage jobs. This is where the line must be drawn.
