Ind. Business Told to Hide Nude Statues

Wednesday, March 30, 2005

(03-30) 13:50 PST Edinburgh, Ind. (AP) --

The Venus de Milo had better wear a top and Michelangelo's David should put on some pants if they're going to be seen at a yard art business.

Bartholomew County officials told the business near Interstate 65 that it must move cement copies of the classical statues — and about 10 others — out of public view because they are obscene under Indiana law.
...
"They have nudity ... and that should not be in the view of a minor," he said.

Indiana's obscenity law prohibits the display of nudity where children might see it, he said.

I wonder if these people put blindfolds on thier children before they shower or change clothes.

My parents had a copy of Venus de Milo in the living room for as long as I can remember. I'll have to tell them it's obscene.

7. Indiana: Nude "David" offends neighbors
EVANSVILLE, Indiana (AP) -- A man who put a replica of Michelangelo's nude "David" sculpture in his yard responded to neighbors' objections by engaging in a cover-up.

Christopher Schapker last week used a strategically placed sheet to counteract concerns about the male nude in the side yard of his home.

Parents of students who attend a neighboring center that provides services for disabled people had expressed concern over the statue's nudity.

Schapker and his housemate, Kerry Niehaus, spent $2,000 for the sculpture to enhance the early 20th century style of their home.

At first, none of the children at the center noticed the statue. Once it was pointed out, it became the source of much discussion, said Rosemary Durbin, whose young daughter spends her days at the Evansville ARC Center.

9. That must mean those little "rain" lamps from the 70's are out too

remember the ones with the gold-colored little statue in the middle, some fake greenery, and little fish-line thingys running between the top and bottom, which carried oil droplets or something?

Man, I wish I had one of those now.

11. I saw the real statue of David, and it was awesome
how in the world did we get from the Greeks' view of the human body as wonderfully magnificent to viewing it as obscene? They seemed to celebrate the body, and we are afraid of it.

13. If people are scared of sexuality, it is easier to control it.
And if you control sexuality, you control one of of the stronger forces on human behavior.

was right when she said that world leaders should have to meet in the nude. If everyone at the UN was naked, maybe there would be less fighting. It makes sense to me.

19. Michigan: Nudity in Michelangelo mural censored
ROSEVILLE -- To some, the black cloth covering Eve's breast on a mural outside an artist's studio on Gratiot is an ominous symbol of censorship.

To others, the cloth represents a triumph for law and order.

Metro Detroiters have mixed opinions about a fight that's raging between Roseville officials and artist Edward Stross, who painted a rendition of Michelangelo's "Creation of Man" on the wall of his studio last year.

City officials say Stross violated Roseville's sign ordinance by painting the word "love" and depicting a bare-breasted Eve on the mural outside his Gonzo Fine Arts Studio on Gratiot. Stross was sentenced last week to 30 days in jail by a district court judge, who also ordered him to cover Eve's breast.

Send 'Bartholomew County officials' a copy of the Dilbert strip where Dogbert and Tina the Technical Writer discuss the Venus de Milo. Maybe they'll get the clue on how silly this sounds.

25. I'm glad I live in New Orleans
:P

Though, one hour North of our wonderful city (the South), live really really dumb people that would likely blow up the statue, just like the Taliban.

The Irony is, many students from Indiana come to New Orleans year round just to see titties. x(
