Why do wingnuts talk about condoms as though they're talking about heroin?
What's the big deal about condoms? Is it evil or something?

The wingnuts seem to think that even if some kids cannot be abstinent, they should still not be educated about condoms. I don't get it.

4. Good one!
Very true, too!

The pukes want it both ways. And just as they are fiscally irresponsible, they don't see that trying to have it both ways is irrational too.

10. Thompson Talks About Bush, Booze, and Drugs at His Super Bowl Party.
Hunter S. Thompson Talks About Bush, Booze, and Drugs at His Super Bowl Party.

Hunter S. Thompson is the author of "Fear and Loathing in Los Vegas" (1968), which featured his literary alter ego, Raoul Duke, a man who knew his way around drugs and booze. Six years later in "Doonesbury," Garry Trudeau, once called a "character assassin" by Poppy Bush, introduced Uncle Duke, and Thompson thought about a libel suit against Trudeau, but decided against it. "I didn't want to grapple in the gutter with Trudeau," Thompson is quoted as saying in the "Talk of the Town" section of the May 15th "The New Yorker."

This March, Douglas Brinkley reports in "The New Yorker" story, the New York "Observer" (see below) noted that George W. Bush, then 28, attended Thompson's 1974 Super Bowl party in Houston, and, since then, folks have asked Thompson for details. Here's part of what he told Brinkley: "I can't be expected to remember what every drug-addled yuppie hanger-oner who wanted to get close to me during a football game twenty-five years ago digested. There were so many dope fiends milling about, I don't remember what some Yalie named Bush, whose father was a factotum in the Nixon Administration, was doing. But he strikes me as the sort of person I would have thrown out of the room. A rich, beer-drunk yahoo with a big allowance who passes out in your bathtup....I don't want to become the Deep Drug Throat....I won't do it." --Politex, 5/20/00

"W....was my college classmate, though barely known to me....{with} an irreverent spirit, something I thought I glimpsed in a chance encounter with him and Hunter Thompson a quarter-century ago at a Super Bowl in Houston. I can’t recall who was hanging out with whom, but it was January 1974, it was in the atrium of the Hyatt Regency, the Super Bowl headquarters hotel (I was there to write about the spectacle which featured Dolphins versus Vikes that year) and I think it was a mutual friend, a fun-loving preppy guy I knew from college who also somehow knew Hunter and W. who brought us all together in a room in the Hyatt. I don’t remember exactly what went on, but I do remember coming away with a favorable impression of W.

"I remember thinking he was one of the preppy types I’d always kind of liked, the hang-loose, good-ole-boy types, many of whom took the interregnum on careerism, which the war and the draft mandated as a cue to break out of the mold a bit, wander off the reservation, poke into the sides of life their trust funds otherwise might have sheltered them from. I sensed what W. liked about Hunter Thompson was that Hunter too was another button-down good old frat boy (once) who went weird but in a good-old-boy way." --Ron Rosenbaum, "The New York Observer," 3/27/00

George W. Bush: The lost chapters
The Texas governor has spoken sparingly about his life between 1968 and 1974. The anti-Bush Web site gwbush.com is now running a daily cyberserial to help fill in the details. Calling the fictional series "Fear and Loathing in East Texas," the site promises to illuminate the years "from W's Yale graduation up to his re-surfacing at Hunter S. Thompson's Super Bowl party." In today's episode, a young Bush turns down a cross-country Volkswagen voyage with a friend to uphold his family name. "Look man, my Dad's running for Senate right now, and my grandfather was a famous senator, and his father was a powerful admiral, and it goes on like that all the way back to the pilgrims, you know?" the Bush character explains to his hippie friend. "All eyes are on us, and now there's a war on ... Aw, just forget it, it's a ruling class thing -- you wouldn't understand."

Meanwhile, the cocaine story continues to develop. First, it has come out that Bush attended notorious drug fiend Hunter S Thompson's Super Bowl party in 1974. He must have been in an especially celebratory mood with his discharge from the Guard and acceptance into Harvard Business School.

Remember, 1974 is the year where Bush's denial of cocaine use stops. He says he's been clean since that year but won't comment on 1974 or before. Asked about Bush's activities at the party Thompson, who's most famous book is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, said,

"I can't be expected to remember what every drug-addled yuppie hanger-oner who wanted to get close to me during a football game twenty-five years ago digested. There were so many dope fiends milling about, I don't remember what some Yalie named Bush, whose father was a factotum in the Nixon Administration, was doing....I don't want to become the Deep Drug Throat....I won't do it." {New Yorker magazine, May 15 2000} Isn't that just Priceless!

8. It's all politics...
Republicans need to make sure they don't loose their heavy Christain base to a third party, so they make sure to keep their beliefs in line with the churches. I think what we need to do is stop this bullshit national debate on sex ed and just let the school boards decide what is right for their districts.

9. Save the sperm!
THere's probably a photo on Drudge somewhere showing a happy, smiling little sperm. Poor little guy, how sad it would be if he met his fate crashing into a wall of latex. (Apologies to Woody Allen for using his joke.)

It never ceases to amaze me that people who are so against abortion are also opposed to the methods that would reduce them. Anyone with such a strong opposition to abortion should be advocating free, easy access to family planning.

12. A whole mess of reasons
Appealing to the fundies is one of them. Some others I can think of are control issues. When you're a teen, you're too old for the parent groups to care about you anymore, but too young to do the things adults can do.
Also after all the conversations I've had with various neo-cons I believe that a number of them are so brainwashed into accepting hate, greed, cruelty, and/or self-rightousness that concepts of sex with love and not just procreation make them scared. I've talked with ones who's be more than happy if the government threw all of our money into our military but believe that giving kids info on sex (because they're too stupid and immature to handle it) is "like giving them instuructions on how to make a bomb and then tell them not to use it." (That was an actual quote I got from oen of them.)
I don't know if I feel sorry for them or just want to scream my lungs out at them. Now I know what the young Bill Hicks felt like.
Love,
Yaoi Huntress Earth

27. Here is a reason
They think abstinence-only education works. It is a lie. In Taxus where they have been doing the abstinence-only thing they rank high for teen pregnancy and have had nearly the lowest decline. States that do the condom thing have performed much better in this regard.

The notion is that if they ban birth control and abortions, we country will return to the lovely puritan past. The problem is that this state never actually existed.

It is just like the trickle down economics bit, part of Reagan's fantasy world. For 20+ years these fundies have been trying to restore the country to a former ideal state, which never really existed.

Hitler had a romantic fantasy of a pure race, the fundies have a romantic fantasy of a pure set of values and a society that embodies them.

14. Because they're idiots
they think making condoms available to young adults will promote premarital sex. Their reasoning (narrow-minded and unrealistic as it is) demands abstinence - nothing else; no point in talking about or distributing condoms. Teaching about sex is completely unacceptable to a christian right winger.

Kids are gonna have sex - telling them not to doesn't work. Give them condoms and teach them so they don't get pregnant and/or STDs.

21. My take on this
I think it was 4 years ago when the Texas Legislature changed the sales tax, removing some health care items from taxable to non-taxable. After then Gov Bush signed it the wing nuts discovered that condoms were now non-taxable and they went ballistic. they did not want to let all those unmarried fornicators having protected sex tax free. Of course it never occured to them that married people could use condoms also.

It never seems to occur to them that if God wanted a conception to happen, a little thing like a piece of rubber/latex isn't going to stop Him.

28. Because in the RW mind
All teenagers are good kids who go around reading their bibles and learning how to make money (or for women: learning to take care of the young 'uns).

All of the sudden they see condoms and they realize they could have sex, something they never knew about or thought of before!!!

So they toss aside their bibles, tear off their clothes and start doing it right there. After that men realize there are more important things then making money and women turn into witches or lesbians or something. This makes god angry so he goes to people who follow other religions and has them attack America like he would have Assyrians attack the Israelites in the Old testament and then we're all carried off to Babylon and our society collapses.

See all the problems condoms bring! Do you want to be carted off to Babylon? I didn't think so.

Wow, I feel like I was channeling Falwell for that one
