Dem leadership endorses that tax cuts create jobs?!
Edited on Sun Sep-14-03 03:02 PM by David_REE
The Democratic leadership just urged Bush to cut corporate taxes on manufacturers to create jobs.

Doesn't this admit that the idea behind Bush's economic plan was right all along?

Is this bad judgment?

1. sometimes tax cuts DO create jobs ...
It is always according to how they are structured and has absolutely NOTHING to do with what Bush did. For example, tax credits for hiring new workers IN America could do quite a bit while cutting taxes on dividends would do absolutely nothing because it is predicated on nothing other than the accumulation of wealth and the refusal of the company to plow profits into expansion or capital investment.

No, it is not at all an endorsement of Bonehead's misbegotten policies.

2. I hope, however, this was discussions before the last tax cuts - or
about changing the just past tax cuts, and not a discussion of more tax cuts. While targeted tax cuts can be wise - the explosion in our spending and the starvation diet of our revenues (in part due to the bad economy and in part due to more tax cuts) - makes anything adding more to the deficit a dangerous proposition.

7. EXACTLY WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING!
And it's exactly why Republican fiscal policy pisses me off.

9. Ah!
Clark's position....move the money and make it work.

Also, money to the states creates jobs.

3. Tax cuts done right create jobs..
Edited on Sun Sep-14-03 03:27 PM by lib4life
If you reduce the tax burden on small businesses (rather than large corporations), and the other engines of economic growth (consumers), you can create jobs. It all has to be in balance though, and giving tax cuts to the wealthiest, and causing deficits will wreck us in the long term. My point is, give the tax relef to those who need it the most, and are most likeely to put in back into the economy. The antithesis of the Bush plan.

4. Tax cuts on the lower and middle class can help, but
there are better ways to improve the economy and create jobs. Just because something works a little (at great cost; i.e., the deficit) doesn't mean that something else won't work better.

5. Good point.
The Reaganites ignore the costs of their lust for infinite tax cuts, and spending increases. The legacy of Reaganomics is deficits. Pure and simple.

8. The legacy of Reaganomics is...
That tax cuts to help out Businesses and create new jobs help our economy. Personal tax cuts don't really do jack. Of course most Reaganites wrongly interperate this as "Well we had a good economy under Reagan eventually, so let's just copy everything he did."

6. Do you have a link. I suspect these are tax breaks which are targeted
to job creation.

There's a difference between cutting the income tax rates so that companies end up making money for doing nothing, and creating a tax break that is targeted to, for instance, companies that add people to the payroll.

Bush's philosophy is that corporations should pay low or no income taxes.

Democrats feel they should pull their fair weight, and get breaks for actually doing things which are good for the economy.

10. Lefty dem senators kinda screwed us on this one...
Edited on Sun Sep-14-03 08:32 PM by Hippo_Tron
For not doing this when the tax cut was in Congress. There was a small moderate group of Senators who didn't vote for the tax cut but said they would've if it was done right. The stronger left end of the party only focused on how we could be spending the money on healthcare and other things, when it was inevitable that the tax cut was going to happen with a Republican controlled House and Senate and Zell Miller supporting the tax cut in pure form. In addition I wish John Breaux and Max Baucus had done more with this in the negotiations. They really could have done so much more especially with the knowledge that Bill Frist's job was basically in their handse. Now Limbaugh can tell everybody that we are going back on what we said before and supporting Dubya's policies.

11. Changes in the Tax Code Might Sometimes Create or Retain Jobs
The Bush approach, which began with the historically low Clinton-era marginal tax rates, does little to address the dynamics of real world job creation. It's goal was always to return money to the richest segment of individuals within society, who are under no obligation to spend it or invest it in a single job-generating activity. Anyone who seriously thought that these cuts would generate new jobs must be still using the same drugs that Dubya did in his party animal days.
