How Freepers deal with the news
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/945139/posts

First they edit the topic line from "Bush cited" to "Tenet approved" and then bring up excuses like this:

To: SetYourselfOnFire

Easy!

Tenet is a hold-over from the most corrupt administration (CLINTOON) in the history of American politics.

1. Bush takes this country to war on the basis of nothing except lies
and Clintoon was the "most corrupt" administration in history. Thinking like this is absolutely mind boggling. I'll never understand.

6. Well
How convenient for Team Bush to throw Tenet overboard, making it all the easier for conservative keyboard peckers to blame Bill Clinton.

14. well at least one isn't in denial
To: SetYourselfOnFire

I think too many freepers are engaging in wishful thinking, by taking this to be a tempest in a teapot and media/RAT desparation ploy.

I'm afraid that this is potentially very big. The problem is that it really does look like the BUSHIES wanted to be cute with the facts. They KNEW the Niger claims were unreliable. They wanted the impact of some claim about uranium, even if it wasn't true. They put in the claim about what the British said. So insteady of sayingn Iraq has tried to buy Uranim -- which they didn't really believed, but wanted to be true -- they said the Brits said that Iraq has tried to buy Uranium

Now they've said something true -- something true about the BRITS -- but by crediting that assertion of the Brits. they IMPLY without directly saying that Iraq has indeed tried to buy Uranium. It's sort of a non-assertion assertion (what linguists and philosophers call a conversational implicature).

But that's good enough given the scant scrutiny Bush's words were receiving in those days. I mean everybody in DC basically, including many RATs and the media was ready to fall in line. So the sleight of hand wasn't really noticed.

What's happening now is that at a minimun the press no longer takes Bush at his word. He's lost his reputation for straight-forwardness and honesty. Now the press sees hidden agendas and half-truths behind every utterance

Plus they feel as though they've been had. And once the media feels as though its been had by a politician, they turn on him/her BIG TIME. Mark my words. The Washington Post. the New York times all of them are about to go into Watergate mode.

Problem is that there are probably lots of people in Defense, CIA, and State who really were opposed to this war and think its aftermath proves what idiots the neo-con hawks were. They are going to start leaking like sieves. Just because Tenet took the fall, don't expect the CIA to go along. And State and many of those old-fashioned generals in Defense who kept telling Rumsfield that more boots were needed on the ground are going to extract their pound of flesh.

Mark my words. This is for all the marbles folks. And I don't want to predict who the winner will be, but you are going to see political intrique of a sort this capital has probably never known before.

look at his name for one, and he's been there since November of 2001. Probably a paleoconservative.

18. Paleoconservatives are oddities all right.
I got into a conversation with this fellow at a 24-hour music/book outlet-hole-in-the-wall on Avenue A about a month ago, about Samuel Beckett and Williams S. Burroughs, of all things. Turns out he's a paleocon, who has nothing but disdain for these neocunts. He told me he thought that the situation surrounding Crusader Bunnypants bears a lot of resemblance to JFK's situation vis-a-vis the CIA and the military. (So perhaps there's a Dealey Plaza Part Deux in the works?) The whole spectrum of politics is intriguing though, I must say. But Goldwater was a paleocon, of a different stripe than Buchanan, so I'm not exactly sure wtf he is really. A lot of them have a deep dislike and distrust of the neo's and the fundies.
