Let's plan a RECALL march on Washington for July 4th
We also need to march on our state capitals weekly demanding new elections.

If the religious right can tear up our Constitution regarding Terri Shiavo, then the progressives need to get out there for new elections and election reform. We can even use our Declaration of Independence and instead of having it say "King George" we can replace it with George W Bush.

Could citizens marching on Washington force impeachment proceedings?

18. Hi Truman! didnt know you were still alive. Thanks for trying to get free
healthcare. I remind newbies here, that the AMA defeated your effort.

The AMA is evil.

Harry, come out of retirement and run for something! We need you.

PS your tax structure was the best ever -- 91% top tax rate. Now it is a weak, pathetic 35%, and the root cause of all the cuts to the dem programs. "we so sorry, just not any money for your dem programs in the fed budget".

Your rate now, would DOUBLE fed revenues. An additional 2. 6 Trillion.

300 billion would end all usa poverty, incl hunger and homelessness. With over two trillion left over.

7. To answer your actual question...
Yes. But we'd have to fill the ENTIRE mall.

The Iraq war protests weren't even close.

Think Million Man and Million Mom march COMBINED. It would have to rival the civil rights March on Washington.

10. Know how we can get permits, etc?
July 4th they usually have tight security, we might have to do it just before or right after...

12. No. It must be during.
It's our Independence Day. I live here in DC. It's just a party here.

Let's make it actually mean something for a change.

9. I'd like to see a recall provision in the Constitution
For 2nd term presidents only.

I would have it work something like this. 10% of registered voters in 3/5 of the 51 states and the District of Columbia would have to sign recall petitions, which would then be certified by each state's Secretary of State and then be sent to the Federal Election Commission. The FEC would then certify that the required number of states have submitted certified recall petitions and a new election owuld be held in 60 days.

Voters would vote yes or no on the recall of the President and would have the ability to vote for a replacement candidate, in the same way as California's system worked. In this case the electoral college would be bypassed, in favor of a direct election. For a replacement candidate to be eletced he/she would have to win an absolute majority of the popular vote. If the the president was recalled and no replacement candidate won a majority, then a runoff election would be held between the top two vote getters within 60 days. The runoff would be according to the traditional electoral college model (which can really only work in a two candidate race).

15. a bit too complex: and, apply to first term also
very good plan. If you can simplify it, better.

eg. simple majority of states.
Or better, avoid state units. Be rational and use population majority.

States are irrational units when measuring national sentiment.

How did Ukraine succeed?

Recall is fine word. Impeach not seem doable, with repubs in the House.

but recall is fine structure to use.
even if it is not on the books for the prez. Or is it? Ought to be.

Some have posted here at DU, about sick outs every twentieth of every month.

We need to raise money to charter buses and coordinate a ride board.
We need to table and hand flyers out.
We need to treat this march the same way we would an election campaign!

19. if you are planning an event,
you need to make sure that folks all across the country TAKE PICTURES. as we have found out the last few years, CONs (Corporate Owned Networks) do not cover news if it's not good for *.

Pictures are how we need to tell our story.

If/when we are no longer to post photos of events in the US, our
overseas friends should be able to post on web sites that still tell the truth.

shit - this is 1937 all over again.

Calling all Patriots - March on DC 7-4-05

This country is ready for a second Declaration of Independence, and we need to act now while
we still have a Constitution and any semblance of law and order. I have served my country in the military and I love being an American, or at least the myth of being American that I grew up with. We need a march on Washington DC that combines the Million Man March and the Million Mom march pale in comparison. And we need shadow marches on all state capitals.

We need to edit the declaration to represent all 50 states and expatriates and territories. We want all new elections - Presidential and Congressional. We want election reform. We want checks and balances. We want a free press. We want separation of church and state.

We cannot export democracy abroad, while it withers here at home. When our representatives stop representing they need replacing. Our country and the rule of law is in trouble.

How do we do this?

Bring this up at your MeetUps and to your friends and neighbors.
Do we need a permit in DC?
We need a webste and an online ride board.
If you cannot get to DC, plan local marches.
Write inviting letters to the editor of your local papers.
We're discussing it at DU -
