DailyKos: NO Military Service for Gannon/Guckert
by Joe in DC - 3/24/2005 12:39:00 PM

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/3/24/111751/735

"A lot of comments remind us not to forget about the Jeff/James Gannon/Guckert scandal. Believe me, we haven't...even though the MSM seems to have.

DailyKos has another new development involving Jeff/James. Looks like our boy may have made up the whole military record thing too:

Fake name. Fake reporter. Fake news agency. And now this ...

Fake Marine.

First, we went to the Military Personnel Records of the National Personnel Records Center at St. Louis, Missouri, the supposed repository of all military records. No record showed, but the official letter hemmed and hawed and scraped its military-booted feet so much, kinda sorta explaining that they're often ... well ... ummm ... screwed up ... and that we should check directly with the United States Marine Corps at Quantico. You know, just to ... ummm ... make sure." (more at link):

1. This is assuming Guckert isn't another alias.
Maybe he is one of Poppy's former call boys, born and raised specifically to serve gay Republicans.

Only closet cases aloud in the military. This would be the people who could see through the facade of the closet cases. Which would be bad for blackmail...

3. After reading the Sunday NYTimes
"Interview" with Guckert I was more convinced than ever that this guy is one *Class* act. Some of it seemed to insinuate more, most of it implied he is a dolt, a "tool" (snorf, har har) of the Right, in all the ugly, unpleasant, and potentially unsanitary ways...

17. Well, there may be reason's why they paint him as "dolt".
It wouldn't surprise me if he was actually a NOC who now needs to be marginalized by this government. As this post points out, this guy seems to have no traceable past....I find it incredibly odd that, in this day and age and the internet exposure/scrutiny he's come under, no one has been able to trace this guy from the time he graduated from college (maybe) through his showing up as a WH reporter. And I really do wonder about his internet prostitution business....just a little moonlighting to make ends meet? Or a honeypot to entrap and compromise influential people? If he had a clearly documented past, I'd lean towards the former.

So, if there is more to GG then we've discovered, I would expect the Times and outlets like CNN to help the cause by making GG out to be an incompetent buffoon. That way, they can make any investigation of GG out to be a waste of time by a bunch of conspiracy kooks. If the Times/CNN says "move on, nothing here", I'm more inclined to keep stickin' around.

You have several gems in your post. One of them I've quoted in the subject line, because it encompasses my working hypothesis about g/g/g/whomever.

And, in response to:

So, if there is more to GG then we've discovered, I would expect the Times and outlets like CNN to help the cause by making GG out to be an incompetent buffoon. That way, they can make any investigation of GG out to be a waste of time by a bunch of conspiracy kooks.

Precisely. And, one would expect all kinds of efforts to disrupt anyone trying to do the detailed, exhaustive research required. Something many of us have witnessed.

And, in response to:

If the Times/CNN says "move on, nothing here", I'm more inclined to keep stickin' around.

Yes, and many of us are doing just that.

Peace.

27. yeah, I hear you - but -
I mean after reading it, _he_ at least is not the master-mind behind this, that much is eminently clear.

Which means, I suppose, that his 'handlers' (snorf snorf) are very clever.

Or, he could have simply been dating someone in the White House *karlrove*cough* who could get him access as a gift, and he could then...

you know_ come to think of it_ I don't buy it either.

Shouldn't he have army buddies coming out of the wood-work? At least one or two...There's so much there, you can just smell it, anyone can see it...

...what he is capable of doing or whom he may be associated.

All we have are 'appearences' of g/g/g/whomever; that much is indeed eminently clear.

Thank you for your comments.

60. Interesting question.
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 08:41 PM by troubleinwinter
Is this guy as dumb as he seems? He sure seems pretty dumb, that's for sure, if you read his "writings".

But how can a guy that dumb end up living in a pricey area of Capitol Hill, with a newish vehicle, and no apparent means of support? With nice enough clothing to attend WH briefings along side legitimate "journalists".

His back tax issue would seem to indicate that he may have had some sort of legitimate employment once upon a time? But we have no clue how many years back that may have been.

82. NYT interview
In that interview, he did not seem to say anything too cryptic, but he did say that he had a 72 year old mother. Was he perhaps throwing us a hint? I gooogled the hell out of anything to do with Noreen Gosch, but was not able to find her age. Does anyone out there know how old Noreen is? She looks much younger in the one photo which is always shown on the net, but that could be a very old photo.

4. I kinda OD'd on Gannon, but I still hafta wonder if he isn't a totally
made-up person. In the way that the government can give somebody a whole new identity, I mean. There have been no old friends or classmates who've surfaced, to talk about growing up with him, far as I know. That's just so strange.

9. DUers did find photos of him from a high school year book.
He was class president or VP his junior year, under the names James Guckert. He wrote sports for the school newspaper. I think the reason no one has come forward is that he lived in a fairly small town in a conservative part of Pennsylvania--and how many Americans even know about him? Considering most of the country gets their news exclusively from MSM which under-reported or didn't report at all on Gannon/Guckert, it could simply be that no one who knew him well enough to comment on him has even heard of this scandal. My opinion only, FWIW.

16. I know about the yearbook and the name, but that's all
there was. Maybe I read too many police procedurals, LOL, but that's not definitive. Yes, there was a James Guckert from that high school. Do we know it's him (Gannon)? Are those photos clear, from high school? I know there were some from college. And that's another place nobody owns up to knowing him at. West Chester is a teacher's college, not exactly a party school per se, but a chummy place (went to some parties there in the 70s). It's just all so vague, not definitive.

Yeah, maybe a reporter from a known outlet would have more resources to investigate, and maybe people would be more ready to trust/talk to an MSM reporter. But still. Everybody's from someplace, and everybody has somebody who knew him when. A small town would just make that easier, IMO. It's just weird.

I think there is a very deep story here. The more time goes on, the more obvious it is

Thank goodness those who researched and investigated Watergate didn't walk away in the middle of it, feeling that they'd OD'd on it.

Gannon/Guckert has gone to some effort to build his FALSE history. Here is his entry on Military.com

He claimed to have taught in public schools. NO fellow teachers, NO students have stepped up to say what a great teacher he was.

Claimed to have been a union truck driver. NO workmates, union buddies, employer.

He claimed to have been a website developer. No clients (course, maybe they were ALL porn/prostitution sites?).

NO neighbors anywhere to say what a nice fellow.

NO shopkeepers.

Not one friend.

NO fellow parishioners to step up and say what a wonderful Christian he is.

71. You are right according to the article
it was the mid '80s.

Gannon/Guckert played for local softball team

By Marco C. Baker
PGN Editorial Assistant
© 2005 Philadelphia Gay News

An Washington, D.C. writer who sparked recent controversy involving the White House and the journalists who cover it, once played for a local gay softball team.

Like others in the White House press corps, Jeff Gannon had daily access to media briefings. But his questioning of President Bush and press secretary Scott McClellan was criticized as soft by veteran reporters, who also complained that Gannon's queries were really meant to squelch Bush's critics.

But in the mid-1980s, Gannon was known as James Dale Guckert, a Wilmington, Del., resident and member of the gay City of Brotherly Love Softball League. He played for Woody's Bar and Restaurant's team.

Gannon, a correspondent for Web sites GOPUSA and Talon News, sparked controversy by the questions he asked, which were seen as biased. Internet "bloggers" began investigating him. With popular blogs such as DailyKos.com joined by conventional news media, Gannon's past was exposed, revealing that he once worked as an gay escort.

(snip)

But of course, these leads to the question "which gannon is the gannon in the photograph?"

I don't recall a photograph being provided with the story, just a reference to the potrait.

... is the line

"Wood turned to the portrait to easily point out Gannon, last row, third from right."

It seems someone is trying very hard to be specific --- "last row, third from right", hmmmm

Also, i have a strong feeling that all the names in the article are aliases.

Finally, it is curious that while i can access older PGN articles this one is accessible only in the cache. hmmmm

Again, the real story is the emerging industry in this country of people who are making their living...lying. The Swiftboat Liars Club. (do any of those guys have a "real" job...or is jetting around to spew vitriol on Texas fatcat money their only means of support? ) Plus now all the Terri Shaivo liars coming out from under their rocks to rant their conspiracy theories.
Is this how Dubya is creating jobs? By providing fatcat money for liars? Hey, it worked for Linda Tripp and Paula Jones. Those ladies haven't done any honest work in years.

I do not want to see us beat up on Gannon. I too think there is a huge story looming here and I am almost convinced that Gannon, at the heart of this story, will prove to be a victim. Beat up on mainstream media, beat up on the hypocrisy of the value laden phony Republicans, but lets wait till we hear the rest of the story on Gannon/Guckert. At least I'm prepared to wait it out. I do hope I'm right about him, because he may the the key that unlocks the door on the cabal.

40. Who wants to bet he'll write a book?
Maybe his good buddy Sean Hannity will write the foreword? I'd really like to know how this guy got coveted press credentials following heightened security after 9-11. Maureen Dowd was told her clearance would take months. So was Sarah McClendon and Helen Thomas. But Jeff swept in on a blog that had been operational for six days. Under an alias. And he was so carefully non-vetted that his entire bio appears to be faked.
There are legitimate questions here. The porno-stud for hire stuff is just the sensational sizzle that will get the story into the MSM. If Jeff decides to play.
Paula Jones and Linda Tripp paylayed their sad little stories into years of rightwing payola. Jeff probably wants his cut of the wingnut largesse. The Swiftboat Liars Club has been flying high, literally (jetting around the country fueled by Texas oil money). Jeff is nothing if not an opportunist.
Here's his chance.

66. Indeed. Or, if your motive at the time (late '90s) was to do as ....
....speculated in comment # 17 & 18. And, that enable you to gather enough dirt to find yourself welcome at the West Wing by 2002/3, and able to access just about any damn bit of national security information you might want (e.g. Plame, Iraq invasion), and if you are now holding all kinds of folk hostage with the enormity of the blackmail information you're leveraging against them.

And, if you're also having a little fun, in a N-dimensional matrix game, with a bunch of folk on the internets.

By the way, it should be rather obvious to everyone that whomever g/g/g/??? is, he is not stupid; in fact, just the opposite. To approach the him with any mindset other than one of awareness of his proven skills (just how many of you walk the West Wing daily, for starters) is to relinquish any chance of discovering the truth.

Just guessing, of course.

(oh, and, I always like to say :hi: to Jeff, or is it Jim, or is it Johnny or is it.....)

74. So, the uniform and the medals are questionable?
Well then, maybe it is time to have another look at the website serving the 18 people who make up
The Regiment of the Black and Tans
A Los Angeles Uniform Club.
http://blackandtans.org/
As you can see, Malecorps.com is very closely affiliated with them.

Select the UNIFORM STORE.
This should bring you to www.soldiercity.com.
Scroll down the column on the left.
Click on DOGTAGS.

Now, scroll down to the very bottom of the column on the right
until you see WHAT'S NEW AT SOLDIER CITY.
Click on MEDALS AND RIBBONS.

Now this is where you-all come in.
Check the fake medals against the buff serviceman
and report back to base.
First one back with concrete news is next in line to purchase a
SEMPER FIDO DESERT BULLDOG BOBBLEHEAD

It rather appears that a lot of military-look props can be purchased at soldiercity.
Starting with dogtags.

75. I started a thread on his gay-porn photos being a disgrace to the uniform
...and two "concerned DU'ers" jumped my bones to state that Gannon was, indeed, an honorably-discharged veteran of the US Marine Corps.

As a result, I self-deleted the thread.

What does this tell you about the man...and his covert supporters on this board?

And OH...JUST BY THE WAY...HIS USE OF MILITARY UNIFORMS ON HIS GAY PORN WEBSITE WAS A CRIMINAL DISGRACE TO THE UNIFORMS OF THE US MILITARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...have worn them with honor.

No argument from me on any of what you've posted. Check #76, if you have any further questions on my tolerance for repulsive exploitation of 'the uniform.'

And, by the way, we don't know who "Gannon" is and we have zero evidence he was in the military, let alone honorably discharged.

And, I assure you, anyone who places any form of military uniform on their person and then displays disrespect is going to get nothing but fierce denunciation from me -- anyone.

Peace.

80. Ummm.... I would just like to say
Edited on Fri Mar-25-05 02:00 AM by DulceDecorum
that Jeff Gannon is getting clean away with his activities and this is partly because some people keep shooting down research that is being done on him.
So, now that we are not to speak about how or where Jeff Gannon may have obtained his fake uniform and fake dogtags and fake military gear,
and most especially not to say one word about his career as a rent boy,
let us shift the conversation to military films such as
A FEW GOOD MEN.

Col. Jessep: You want answers?
Kaffee: I think I'm entitled.
Col. Jessep: You want answers?
Kaffee: I want the truth.
Col. Jessep: You can't handle the truth.

Galloway: Tell your friend not to get cute down there, the Marines at Gitmo are fanatical.
Lt. Weinberg: Fanatical about what?
Galloway: About being Marines.

More good quotes at:
http://www.garnersclassics.com/qfewgood.htm

The fact that researchers at DKos have now demonstrated the GannonGuckert was NOT a Marine
(to the best of the our knowledge)
means that the Marines can now lift their heads up again.
The US Marine Corps can DISOWN James D Guckert as a poser and impostor.
So why in tarnation,
would someone allegedly DEFENDING the Marines,
now go and jump in front of a bullet aimed at James D Guckert, impostor?

The man in that uniform on that website is HIMSELF an impostor
and this was in the process of being confirmed IN PUBLIC.
But now it will never be.
And the naked fake militarystuds on MaleCorps thrive -- because you are actively interfering with the collection of evidence needed to force them to discontinue the commercial exploitation of the uniform.
Congratulations on a job well done.
Semper Fi.

89. Even with this info.
We don't know for sure if he served in the military, because we don't know who he is for sure.
Since there has not been much g stuff on here, I don't know if it was ever mentioned. Last week on Big Ed Schulz show, Conyers said that he is still working on the story. Especially why someone with such poor vetting and a mail order journalism degree could get into the press room.
Hopefully there is nothing more sinister planned than simple Rovian propaganda. Gannon overreached and asked too stupid of questions.
Glad to see the old wrinkle crew here. :toast:
