A question for AAR radio listeners
If you listen to AAR on a local radio station, I have a question for you:

Does the line-up on radio station follow the AAR line-up, or does it have some from the flagship line-up along with other hosts?

The reason I ask is, the DC AAR station has Imus (of all people) on instead of Morning Sedition in the morning. Instead of what was Unfiltered, they have on someone named Stephanie Miller.

They play Franken's show from noon to 3, but then Ed Schultz is on from 3-6 pm, when Randi Rhodes is on (they play Randi's show from 6-8, after rush hour).

They also don't broadcast Mike Malloy at all and use CNN radio news instead AAR's news service.

The reason I ask is: I'm just wondering if it's normal for AAR affiliates to change the lineup around the DC has or is it just that DC is too hung up to air some of the edgier AAR shows.

BTW, I'm not knocking Schultz, whom I actually like; I don't know Miller, but it sounds like she's ok from what people have said about her. It's just that they don't seem to have the same edge for me that Randi has and Unfiltered had.

1. Most of the stations are fucking independant.
They rarely play all the goddamn shows in the correct order.

10. That's what I suspected
but I find the DC area a particularly lame radio market, which is why I asked. Even the Pacifica station isn't what it should be, as far as I'm concerned (and Pacifica is even more of a "fucking independent" network, to use your words, than AAR is).

It's not about "correct order", by the way. It's about programming. Why Imus, for God's sake? He's not on enough radio and TV sets around the country, they have to bring him to AAR in DC? I don't particularly care whether Morning Sedition is on or not; it'd be nice if they at least had something truly "progressive" on in the slot rather than that idiot.

In my always humble opinion, of course.

2. I have Sirius ..
I get Morning Sedition, Unfiltered, Franken, Randi, Majority Report, and then Malloy ... on #144 (Air America).

On #143, I get Hartmann, Schultz, Young Turks, etc. (Sirius Left).

Each channel gets to choose its own programming.

Schultz is not part of Air America technically; he is syndicated and part of the Jones Radio Network.

22. And by far Schultz is the most moderate-least liberal of all you mentioned
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 01:40 PM by Zinfandel
I often wonder what Schultz really believes... it constantly shows, there's a lot of right-wing in the guy...I can't listen to him for long...his views seem to stem from where he's making the money...right now it's from the "left" I have no respect for people like that, because I don't believe they can have any respect for themselves. One should be truly dedicated.

I too listen to Air America Radio, via Sirius (and occasionally the Internet).

Thom Hartmann is the best voice out there, NOT on AAR.

I also enjoy Lynn Samuels (on Sirius Left) she never fails to make me laugh, she swears like a sailor and accurately calls republicans "fucking liars"!
(No censorship on Sirius, yes!!!)

26. The one time I listened to him he was ok
But I wasn't inspired to go out of my way to listen to him again.

I also like Thom Hartmann a lot. I used to listen to him on IE America; when I tune into to his show today I get frustrated because the radiostream keeps getting interrupted for some reason.

42. I quite agree with what you have said.
It's like ... when there is relatively little attention on one of the hosts or programs, they speak freely.

For example, hardly anyone knows about "Free Speech TV" on DISH Network (#9415). It's not even highlighted on our guides; so, everyone speaks freely on there (including on GayTV).

And, wouldn't you agree - people speak pretty freely on Sirius Left, which does not get as much attention as hosts on Air America.

Although, on Sirius, Schultz comes to us on Sirius Left.

I really hear you, though, as to the impression Schultz is making; you can hear how he really doesn't agree with a progressive viewpoint in his voice sometimes). It doesn't mean I won't listen to him - I do - and he's polite; he's not my very favorite, though.

3. Most affiliates pick and choose from the lineup
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 12:58 PM by Fighting Irish
In fact, only a few air the entire lineup unchanged. This includes adding other shows such as Schultz, Miller, Springer (who, in fact is joining AAR next week), etc.

AAR started up with an 'all or nothing'-type setup, but is growing much faster with this traditional syndicator model. Good move.

Remember, liberal talk does not live or die with AAR. There are lots of good shows out there not affiliated with AAR.

5. I listen on Sirius so I get the correct, live schedule
Our public AAR station schedule is all screwed up. Malloy isn't on until midnight, and Randi isn't live. I expressed my dissatisfaction and haven't heard back from them. I guess it's better than nothing.

8. Here in Boston our two Clear Channel stations
that air AAR follow the format you noted closely, however, THANKFULLY, they don't offer IMUS. They do offer Morning Sedition which has become my favorite AAR show.

I really enjoy Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz - Stephanie takes alot of rightwingnut calls and she cracks me up with her responses!

9. Time For Local Progressive Radio
With the growing number of affiliates, it'd be nice if some of these stations started bringing on local Progessive hosts...allowing both the network and alternative voices to grow.

I rarely listen to AAR these days...it's turned into the liberal version of the right wing networks...and if you want red meat, this is your place, but it doesn't offer much in news and gets to be very predictable.

Personalities mean nothing to me as well...it's the issues and dialogue that's important.

19. I'd Rather Hear The Local
Many AAR stations are just running the satellite feed with not much else to offer. Again, they offer little real news...and if something important is breaking, i'm off to another station to get the information.

I catch a little bit of Rhodes from Cincinatti at night and pop on Malloy as well...honestly, the rest really don't do much for me and sounds sophmoric at times. I hope these are growing pains...but after one year on the air, not much has really changed in this regard.

21. One of the local shows
is hosted by Nick Coleman. If you've never heard of him, he's been in a public feud with the jerks from Power Line (they are also local, lucky us) since he suggested in his newspaper column that one of them, who is a vice president for a local bank, is blogging extensively on company time. So I'm glad to see him given a forum.

I think the AAR station does rerun all of the AAR national programs on the weekend so they are available here. It would be nice to have 2 stations--one for local and one for national. Conservative talk radio has several stations here.

While I miss Morning Sedition in the morning, I think it's good to have local liberal commentators talking about state politics. Nick Coleman and Wendy Wilde are doing a great job and Minnesotans need to get educated in a hurry!

17. I'm more of a Pacifica listener myself, but I do tune in to AAR
I liked Unfiltered and can usually get into the last two hours of Randi on the 'Net (I listen to KPFA's Against The Grain during her first hour www.againstthegrain.org).

I'm glad AAR is out there, but I agree with you. I want local progressive radio, but I have to tune into KPFA across the country via the Internet to get it most times (which, of course, isn't local at all for me).

23. I Do The Same...
I bought an Internet Radio...Linksys makes it...and operates off my wireless internet and I have all the Pacifica stations...WBAI, WPFW, KPFA & KPFK as pre-sets as well as KCRW in Santa Monica and KGO in San Francisco.

I'm near Chicago, so most of my radio listening is to the various NPR stations I can pull in...WBEZ (which isn't as good as it once was) and Wisconsin Public Radio (the Ideas Network is one of the finest in the country).

AAR is coming to Chicago on 1690AM in April and I'll be glad to have that as an alternative on my push buttons, but without any local programming, I'll tune in every so often as opposed to be a "regular" listener.

This also streams music from your puter...and plugs into your stereo...or sounds real good just with the built-in speakers.

I have seen them on display at Best Buy, Circuit City and CompUSA.

Cheers!

Watch them drop Morning Sedtion or Miller (depending on your city and CC contract agreements) on April 1st when Springer takes over Unfiltered. We don't get Miller here, but we do get some wierdo named Phil Hendrie late at night.

36. Not necessarily
WLIB, if I recall, does air local programming (Carribean and African-American talk) after midnight, per the original agreement between WLIB and AAR.

This may have changed, though they were cutting off Malloy's last hour last time I listened on their stream.

I used to listen to her on the radio when I lived in Los Angeles about ten years ago. Unless she drank the kool-aid and has pulled a Dennis Miller (no relation) within the past few years, she's a die-hard liberal, and has always been vocal about it.

32. In Los Angeles we have
3-6 AM: Morning Sedition
6-9 AM: MOrning Sedition repeated
9-12 PM: Franken
12-3 PM: Ed Schultz
3-7 PM: Randi Rhodes
7-10 PM: Majority Report
10-1 AM: Malloy
1-3 AM: Randi Reruns

AAR is interrupted for LA Clippers coverage because of an existing contract.

I have to say I really like Schultz, but I wish I could hear Randi live without streaming her. And I'd LOVE to have Stephanie Miller on in the 6-9 AM (9-12 ET) slot because Stephanie was on KABC radio for YEARS before it went all right wing and I used to love her. I think she's smart, funny, and a good radio personality, even if she is less hard core lefty than people like Randi and Malloy.
