Me, I pictured the OP talking at Jeb and the Bushite politicians who are grandstanding on this matter. You complaining of "calling out" was totally unexpected. But that's just me.

You might as well say I'm "calling out" if I write a post saying just, "Hey, you still think invading Iraq was a-OK? Then you're a jackass."

that anybody who supports keeping Terri Schiavo alive is a freeper or right wing nut job...

I have disproved that by pointing to the support of the Reverand Jesse Jackson, the Reverand Al Sharpton, half the Congressional Black Caucus and other progressive folks...

Many folks will remember during the waning days of 2004 when it appeared Kerry was going to win I linked free republic with titles here that read "There's A Meltdown At Freak Republic".

I was taking glee in their cosmic pain... Today I share it but for different reasons...

I see this is as not a triumph for the "left" which is why some freepers are upset but a very sad story...

The OP does not attack or call out anyone, and the statement has to do with those who identify themselves as such. If you don't identify yourself as such, then you've no reason whatsoever to take offense to the OP. After all, the OP is not targeting specific DU members or any DU members at all necessarily. You do know that there are FReepers who lurk here who are FReepers? The OP is just sending out an APB to them -- not to you or anyone else personally. You've totally had a knee jerk reaction.

My take is a simple one... In the absence of an advance directive or a living will it is difficult to divine the wishes of a terminally ill patient when there is disagreement between the patient's parents and his or her spouse...

73. I Have No Problems With Folks Refusing Life Support...
I realize that twenty courts have divined that was Terri Schiavo's wishes but they are all basing their decision on the same evidence-

purported oral statements by Terri Schiavo as revealed to her husband, brother in law, and sister in law....

Lots of bad things happen in courts... Guilty people go free.... Innocent people go to prison.... Plaintiffs with colorable claims lose, etcetera....

I am willing to live by the rule of law because the alternative is the rule of the jungle...

I am just not satisfied with the final disposition of this case because it didn't meet my standard of proof...

81. Standard of proof?
Why does the husband have to "prove" anything? It is his decision in the first place. The parents should prove that Terri wanted to be kept alive. They didn't do it. This case has resolved itself appropriately, and the public needs to stay the fuck out of it.

Anyway, why should the default mode necessarily be cramming a food tube down a brain dead person's mouth? Your objection is based on a false assumption.

87. It's Not His Decision
We don't know what Terry Schiavo wants....

She is Catholic and according to Catholic doctrine the removal of life support in this instance is forbidden...

These facts are not in dispute.... Nobody has denied Terri Schiavo is a Catholic and nobody has denied the Catholic Church opposes the removal of a breathing tube in this situation...

Given this burden imho it would take an advance directive or living will by Ms. Schiavo to overcome this burden not the hearsay testimony of a litigant and his siblings...

97. That's not a valid point.
For your point to hold water, it would also have to be proven that she lived her life according to Catholic doctrine.

I'm officially Catholic, but I support gay marriage, have used a condom, had pre-marital sex and had a big ol' steak last Friday.

84. I understand.
However, since the woman is herself now a shell of her former self, with only her most basic life support systems functioning... what is the reasoning for keeping her alive, seeing as how her ability to ever think is gone?

Do you think there might be a miraculous restoration of her cerebral cortex, perhaps?

93. I Am Deferring To Her Wishes As A Catholic....
Nobody is disputing that Ms. Schiavo was a practicing Catholic...

In the absence of a written instrument I would presume she doesn't want to hasten death in a manner proscribed by her church...

38. I am convinced
I know of no one who would want to live in the state Terri is in. I am convinced her husband tried everything in his power to help her before making the decision to let her die. I am not impressed by the way unfounded lies and slander have been thrown at the husband, and think any politician who think it's their duty to step in in such a horrific tragedy they have little to no knowledge of other than hearsay and gossip should be publicly reprimanded.

Punishment for drug use, for avoiding military service, for ethics violations in the house / senate...

Hypocrisy is their forte.

5. Are you referring to the Schiavo case?
I wouldn't term it as "win-lose." That's a bit crass, in my opinion.

Schiavo lost, back in 1990. She lost her right to a peaceful, dignified ending to her life all through these legal and political messes and now she's going to finally be allowed to go peacefully.

No winning or losing in my mind.

41. They're talking about rioting and armed conflict over at freeperland
"This is really getting aggravating! Jeb better put up or shut up. "

"Jeb commands the State Police. They can take care of the Sheriffs, who are county constables."

"It IS time for a riot. I wasn't trying to make a bad joke."

"I know that the state police can "take" a bunch of County Deputies. I don't want a shootout between them, and I'm sure Jeb Bush doesn't either. I'm hoping there's some way he can order them to stand down before he sends in the state police, the way the President can nationalize the National Guard."

Freepers simply want to do away with one branch of government, the judiciary.

NO, stike that: They have no use for the legislative branch either. They simply want one, big theocratic dictatorhsip.

Glad to know they value the Constitution so.
