CORPORATE MEDIA (not main stream media)
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 08:36 AM by paineinthearse
Recall when Guckert's name came to be known, how DU helped lead the public education effort and resulting culture change whereby, in place of writing Jeff Gannon, we started using quotes ("Jeff Gannon") or writing James Guckert? I remember one post noting that Louise Slaugter had used the quotated form in a House press release.

We have another culture change to lead.

say CORPORATE media.

do not say main stream media.

1. CORPORATE media reminds the reader who owns and controls it.
2. Blogs, newsgroups like indymedia & rawstory, and alternative radio are becoming part of the main stream.

So.....

CORPORATE media

not main stream media.

CORPORATE media

not main stream media.

CORPORATE media

not main stream media.

1. I was having a little discussion with diamond14 the other
day & we decided to use Corporate Owned News (CON.)

It seemed to make a lot of sense at the time. . . .

7. I like that, too OK>>>>>>
I like the "con" ring!

So.....do not say main stream media. Say CORPORATE media or CORPORATE OWNED news (CON).

CORPORATE media

or

CORPORATE OWNED news (CON)

not main stream media.

CORPORATE media

or

CORPORATE OWNED news (CON)

not main stream media.

CORPORATE media

or

CORPORATE OWNED news (CON)

not main stream media.

3. True in essence but slightly off in ways
The news is not entirely controlled by the Corporations in the way we seem to want to believe. It is Corporations and their ways that have rendered the media useless as a news outlet. But its not a deliberate conspiracy that has brought it about.

It is simple corporate profit taking that has done the damage. Instead of investing in the news as a tool benefitting the public they have approached it as a money making part of their infrastructure. This means they do not look to it to perform as a stong news gathering institution. It merely has to appear to be a news gathering institution.

For this reason they have cut back on the capabilities and infrastructure. All that is left is a shell. A shell that merely reports what is handed to it. This has meant that the news cannot stand up to manipulation at the hands of the right.

Forced to rely on the information and spin provided by speakers that come from think tanks and other politically backed groups. These voices and their spin are not investigated. There simply isn't any ability left within the news community to do so.

Thus without deliberately doing so the Corporations have turned the news media into an infotainment branch of the right. Because the right was ready and in part responsible for this conversion they were there to take advantage of it. The left relied on the flow of objective information the media once provided. With that gone the left simply does not know how to move their agenda.

4. Of course you are right,
Your points are reasoned and spot on. But until your thoughts can be condensed into two words, I will continue calling them "corporate media".

8. Oh I like the name
It is the corporations that have done the damage. It is their structure that is causing the problem. No problem putting the problem where it lives.

5. This is a very good summery
ALong with it you have the alternative streams of media (like Rush Limbaugh or the bloggers), that work, in large part, to push the corporate media in the direction they want it to go. And up till now the stronger part of this sub-media was conservative. That's changing with the creation of Air-America and bloggers and other things. At least I hope it's changing.

11. It's Never Been Mainstream
Guess who came up with that term...Corporate Media.

I've worked with it and called it such since the 70s...and then it was limited in how big it could be...today it's everywhere. Few realize the same corporation has many different hands in their pockets. For example, few realize Cheap Channel, that owns 1200 radio stations also is one of the largest billboard companies as well as controlling a lot of the live concert music in this country...through control of major venues and their large stake in Ticketmaster. When you show people how nebulous this is, their eyes open. It's time to open even more eyes.

It'd be great to see the term Corporate media start to spread...using places like DU, other message boards and blogs, just like the Repugnicans do, to create buzzwords that will burn into the national psyche and make a lasting impression.

12. Hear hear
I embarked a preacher mode couple weeks ago trying to convince people to change the meme from MSM to CM. Nice to see the flag is being carried victoriously by others. :)
