On that day they're supposed to report to the President that they will be ready to implement a draft within 75 days of his order -- whenever that order may come.

18. They are going to make people fill out SKILL CARDS
Where you tell them what you are good at or what you work at, or what languages you speak. Penalties for perjury, of course, probably many, many thousands of dollars in fines and up to ten years in the clinker--they'll probably prosecute a few liars just to get the point across, and to ensure future compliance. You'll be told to keep your address up to speed too--OR ELSE.

Then your card gets digitized, coded, sorted and categorized for quick retrieval. Then....all depends....

12. There will be no draft!!!
This is a Republican plot to keep us from concentrating on kicking them out of office in 2006. They're going to hang all the draft talk around the neck of that poor, deluded fool, Charlie Rangel, and, by implication, the Democratic Party.

But it will never come to a vote. They're just feeding us rope to hang ourselves, and by God, we're co-operating.

There will be no draft.

22. Not when
they can get Democrats to propose draft laws, the vote against them, making themselves look like fools. Not when all the public talk about the draft comes from Democrats. Not..., but you get the drift.

I never believed that Karl Rove was as diabolically clever as many on this board have given him credit for, but at last I am convinced. he has gotten the Democrats howling for a draft, so that all can share in the burdens of war, and howling against it at the same time. How the hell did he do that?

It is truly pathetic, IMO, that the best plan that we can come up with for regaining congress and the white house is for the Republicans to commit suicide strictly for our benefit. Never happen.

25. Oh, I don't know.
There are several other options. But do you really think the Repukes, who seem to have much better political instincts than we do, based on electoral performance, will destroy themselves over this? I don't. Unlike a lot of people here, I actually have some respect for their intelligence and abilities. This is separate from their stand on issues.

Of course, if you buy that Kool Aid about there never being an honest election in the USA again, well, I guess that wouldn't be a convincing argument. Still, you will see. I have already bet one member that if there is a draft before the end of the year, I would publicly apologize in the Lounge. I will also do it in GD, and I will extend the term of the bet to G*B's entire term.

There will be no draft!!

30. I doubt we'll put additional
ground forces in Korea for the purpose of a ground war. It's not practical from a military stand point. Syria could be possible, but I bet they would wait until 2008, around Sept., to start it. It would be strictly air and armor until after the election.

I pray clearer heads will prevail and keep us out of conflict.

Well put. They are politically astute when it come to using military force. One of the reasons they get away with it is that the MSM doesn't keep showing people the horror that goes on every day. Is it a coincidence that there is another topic, even here in GD, that is diverting all the attention? They pick the fight and we end up fighting on their turf.

It's funny, in a sarcastic sense, that a war for oil drives up the price. Yet more is being pumped then ever before. I really think this should be our main focus. I don't see the need to bend on any of our core values to win elections, we just need to keep the dialog on our talking point, the economy.

47. and in the Spring of 2002
folks thought that there was no way Bush would really push for a war in Iraq... we were still in Afghanistan, with international good will - the rest of the world would be against it, and polls of americans said support for the US taking action alone was about 28%.

And folks thought, from a fiscal standpoint, pushing for more and deeper tax cuts in a time of war would never be pursued - because it was fiscal lunacy...

Point is - this administrationn does not act in sane ways.

There will be no draft, IF, there is no intent to pursue more wars. Which would be the sane thing since we have no manpower for more endeavors. But the neocons are upping the rhetoric against THREE countries. It is insane. But they seem not to be bound by previous conventional wisdom of what is sane and what is insane. This is the problem of ruling by ideology.

So you may be right - but do not count on "no draft" because it would be "insane" for bushco to pursue it.

38. Your friend is correct
The date March 31st is the date that the Selective Service must issue its readiness report to Bush. One of the major changes in policy is the reduction in days from draft-bill passage to recruit induction. Before, the law stated that the Selective Service had 180 days from the date the draft bill is signed to get a recruit on a bus to boot camp. As of March 31, 2005, it will be reduced to 75 days.

Within the year, depending on the level of violence in the area.

So does that mean they will withdraw some troops to appease families of soldiers and then create another terrorist attack to justify the draft call up?

48. I agree with your assessment other than your belittlement of the poster
If a Draft does come about it will be because of the Democrats. The Draft would fill the streets with protesters against this administration and against any war we become involved with. Some Democrats are now actively trying to reinstate the draft because they know it would be the undoing of all the Republican's plans for world conquest. America will not send their sons off to die for oil...All volunteer is one thing..hell they want to go and most are Republicans anyway. You start taking average sons and daughters and the war would end in a hurry...
