Teen Charged In Murder Used Racial Slurs, Police Say

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A teenager accused of killing a man allegedly bragged about the murder because the victim was black, KMBC's Maria Antonia reported.

Gary Eye, 18, was taken into custody Wednesday at a halfway house. He's charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of William McCay, 44, at 9th Street and Brighton Avenue on March 9. McCay was walking to work when he was shot.

Investigators said when Eye bragged about the shooting, he used derogatory speech about blacks. Eye allegedly said: "The (expletive) was walking in my hood, on my time, this is my world and you (expletive) are just living in it ... I will kill every (expletive) on 9th Street."

During 2003, 11,909 law enforcement agencies provided the UCR Program with 1 to 12 months of hate crime reports. Of those agencies, 1,967 agencies (16.5 percent) reported 7,489 hate crime incidents involving 8,715 offenses, 9,100 victims, and 6,934 known offenders. (See Tables 1 and 12.)

Religious bias and sexual-orientation bias each accounted for 16.4 percent of all reported single-bias hate crimes reported. Ethnicity/national origin bias prompted 14.2 percent of offenses, and disability bias spurred 0.5 percent of bias-motivated offenses.
