Andrew Young & Vernon Jorden took over for Bush I at BARRICK CORP.?
Sweet mother of whatever's left that's holy!

http://users2.ev1.net/~kenfree/peace/articles/hightower.html

"In the final days of the first Bush regime, the Interior Department adopted policies that enriched Barrick -- and cost U.S. taxpayers -- "a cool billion or so," according to Palast. In 1995, Barrick hired Bush I as "honorary senior adviser" -- but of course claimed there had been no deal. (When Bush the Younger became president in 2001, one of his first deeds was to dump rules on gold mining waste disposal -- which is likely to cause irreparable environmental harm. One of the biggest beneficiaries is, of course, Barrick.)"

OK. Typical Bush crookery, no surprise there, no?

"Barrick in 1999 acquired another Canadian mining company, Sutton Resources, which was seeking to grab land in Tanzania from small-time prospectors. In his book, Palast reports: "In August 1996, Sutton's bulldozers, backed by military police firing weapons, rolled across the goldfield, smashing down worker housing, crushing their mining equipment. ... About 50 miners were still in their mine shafts, buried alive."

Ouch! That's fucking EVIL.

"Bush left Barrick in 1999 -- it was probably a risky affiliation as his son's campaign ramped up. Replacing Bush was Atlanta's own Andrew Young, who joined another of the city's favorite sons, Vernon Jordan. In an interview, Palast was brutal. "Andy Young is pocketing blood money from African gold." (Young did not return a detailed message asking about his relationship with Barrick.)"

Is this TRUE??? *sigh*

1. I forgot to add that it's claimed that McKinney was pushing for...
...investigations of Barrick's actions in Africa.

3. Now maybe people will start to understand the bad blood
Now maybe people will start to understand another aspect of the bad blood between McKinney, McKinney's father and Andrew Young instead ov believing all the hype and tripe.

Andy Young is scum.

The conditions of the African's in Barrick's mines is APPALLING.

Real blood money from real tears.

5. Yep. After learning about Andy's connection to Barrick, I was not happy

when people started being excited about Andy perhaps taking Zell's seat next year. If Georgia elects a black senator in the next few years, I'd much prefer John Lewis or Cynthia McKinney to Andy Young.

6. Does it explain in the article that THIS (Barrick) is why Andy Young

and Vernon Jordan didn't back up Cynthia McKinney when Zell and the GOP targeted her for defeat? I can't remember where the late Maynard Jackson stood but I don't think Cynthia got support from the black political leaders in Atlanta. Tinoire? Do you remember?

9. She sure didn't! From no support whatsover to little support
And then the few who did support here were vilified by the Zell Miller lovers. Go figure :shrug:

What happened was absolutely shameful and it happened with the full complicity of the Democratic Party.

I really wonder how this is going to play in the 2004 elections. People underestimate the harm this betrayal caused

-------------------
<snip>

It did not help that some prominent Blacks, including NAACP Chairman Julian Bond, Democrat John Lewis of the neighboring Fifth District, former Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson and Andrew Young, former Atlanta mayor and civil rights leader, distanced themselves from Ms. McKinney.

<snip>
The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Rev. Al Sharpton were among national leaders who went to Georgia to urge voters to participate in the 4th District election.

Min. Farrakhan spoke at three churches, held news conferences and talked about the need for Black politicians to be able to represent the interests of voters. He warned the undue influence of outside forces and lobbies erode democracy and can negate the will of voters.

There's a great analysis of the whole affair here: http://www.cpusa.org/article/articleview/514/1/8/

Here's a snippet:
In the 2002 Democratic primary in DeKalb County, 116,544 Democratic ballots were cast and only 6,886 Republican ballots were case. If all the voters casting ballots were Democrats, it would mean that Democrats voted nearly 17 times more often than Republicans, which is highly unlikely.

In the 2000 Democratic Primary 54,861 ballots cast overall. In the 2002 Democratic Primary 116,544 ballots cast, which is a 100 percent increase.

In advance of the primary election day, Republicans telegraphed via media their intentions to intervene in the Democratic primary. There was no response from the State or National Democratic leadership.

As the McKinney campaign concludes, it is clear that she won the Democratic vote. The campaign states, "Republicans do not have the right to determine the outcome of a Democratic primary. Therefore, the outcome of this election is not only a travesty of justice and a perversion of the democratic process, but stands alongside the Florida 2000 debacle as just as illegitimate."

It is estimated that there were 25,000 crossover votes. Following the election, State Representative Tyrone Brooks of Atlanta, Rev. Joseph Lowery of the Georgia Coalition for the Peoples Agenda, and Martin Luther King III, introduced legislation to end crossover voting. Rev. Lowery explained that the legislation was prompted by the McKinney primary in which "Republicans provided the margin which is unethical".
