Here's what I e-mailed my Rep:
Dear Representative XX,
On the heels of this weekend's gallant Congressional efforts on behalf of Terri Schiavo, I am writing to ask you and your colleagues to introduce a "Culture of Life Universal Health Care Bill" to Congress.
This bill, when passed, would do exactly what it says: provide universal health care coverage to every citizen of the United States regardless of age, health, race, sex, religion, or personal income.
It is crucial. Just last week, while everyone was working to save Terri Schiavo's life, a Texas hospital removed a 6-month old disabled infant from life-support over his mother's protests. He took a few final breaths and died in her arms.
Because of the infant's disability, the overwhelming odds were that he would have lived only a few, brief years had he remained on a respirator. But his life was cut unnaturally short by the legal system, not his illness. A TX law passed in 1999 by then Governor George W. Bush (amended in 2003 to include children) gave Texas hospitals the authority to withhold care from certain patients on grounds of cost. Thus the hospital "pulled the plug" on this 6-month old child.
Certainly his mother is poor. But unlike the Schindlers, her child's tragic plight received no attention from Right-to-Life groups. She received no generous pro bono offers from care facilities.
Does that make her son's tiny life any less precious than Terri Schiavo's?
I am sure you agree, there are absolutely no excuses for such hideous travesties of inequity in the health care system of the world's superpower. A "Culture of Life Universal Health Care Bill" is the only answer. It would guarantee proper care from birth to natural death without exception, to ensure the dignity and sacredness of every life...not just those who have social influence or can pay.
This is an opportune time for the introduction of a "Culture of Life Universal Health Care Bill". It is badly needed. And after the spirit displayed on the Hill this weekend, I am certain Congress can find a way to fund universal healthcare in support of the "Culture of Life". I urge you to seize the moment.
With kind regards...
God, after the last few days that made me feel real good. Thanks for suggesting this.
