His dad committed suicide four years ago, and his mom was in a nursing home because of a horrible car accident.

The poor kid was disturbed and hopeless-- like a lot of kids who grow up on the Red Lake rez.

However, there are insufficient facts to fill in the holes. So, my proposal is pure speculation based upon this question: "if I were a distressed Native American teenager and stumbled upon a neo-nazi blogspot, how would I react?"

6. I'm in the minority, but I can't help thinking

that anyone who guns down multiple strangers (or aquaintances) is mentally ill. I just don't see how one could do it otherwise. I don't see that it even needs proving. Some guy pulls out a gun and mows down a bunch of people - that's crazy, kinda by definition.

A doctor was sending a patient to my wife for a psychiatric consult. He paged her and said "This guy's crazy. I don't know what kind of crazy, but he's crazy allright."

I'm excluding soldiers, of course (although a fair number of them wind up mentally ill afterward, but that's a different circumstance).

10. Being a minority doesn't automatically pre-program you with tolerance.

In grade school, some boys got interested in WWII stuff, and an offshoot group of neo-Nazi 7-year olds resulted. One of the kids was Catholic. Another was Black. Their parents eventually taught the truth and the kids quickly moved onto other things. But for a few months, it was downright scary.





I also recall seeing an episode of Jerry Springer long ago where some White supremacists in their early 20s tried to show off how wholesome and family-oriented they were. One woman came from a Jewish background, and she paraded around stage in a Nazi uniform.






Ideas can twist just as readily as human minds do.
