Economy Slowing.
My father and I both work in manufacturing one of us for a major automotive supplier and the other an equipment supplier for manufacturers and other business.

We both have seen are work levels slow to the point of volunteered days off or even volunteered layoffs.

I am not saying we are heading for a bad recession but combined with high fuel prices the US economy is not as rosy as some jerks in Washington makes you think.

Will not give details where we work due to a climate of John Doe lawsuits of blogs.

2. Unemployed 60 Months Now - I Could Have told you This 5 Years Ago!
"Overall, this level of (job) creation represents the worst job performance since the Bureau of Labor Statistics began collecting monthly jobs data in 1939 (at the end of the Great Depression)."

www.jobwatch.org

"In the previous five expansionary economic cycles the average increase in employment over the first 39 months was 10.1%. In the current cycle the increase is 1.5%.

If employment had climbed by 10.1 % since November 2001, we would have added 13.2 million jobs instead of the 1.9 million actually reported. That’s a difference of 11.3 million jobs."

3. It seems to be slowing - manufacturing is often a big sign
another is manufacturing of industrial goods (eg manufacturing equipment of manufacturing). Mitch knows it too - or he wouldn't have proposed a "temporary" tax hike for the wealthy along with cutting programs - that is - that even with the cuts we wouldn't grow our way out of the state deficits.

Now combine work slow downs with climbing debt, declining availibility of health insurance - all in time for a major change to the bankruptcy process - with NO restraints up on predatory lending practices that pray upon folks hitting hard economic times.

Certainly not sunny.

11. I was talking to a State employee who was let go by Mitch
the other day. He had one of those patronage jobs, and had been there for 10 years. I said "So my man Mitch got you eh?"

And he said, "Yeah, and I am a REPUBLICAN! I think they got mad at me because I was hanging out with some Democrats. Looks like I was hanging out with the wrong people."

And I said, "Yes you were, the ones that laid you off."

4. My neighbors
The people who live across the street are such sweet people. They word for a small factory that makes molds for some sort of car part. The other company in town (St. Petersburg) shut down but the business at this small company has slowed to the point, they went from operating 24/7, to one shift Monday through Friday!

I spoke to the wife yesterday and she said it was even slower and they'd cut back the hours even more plus made the employess take a pay cut.
Her husband asked her what kind of job she'd like if the company has to close. . .at least they don't have kids.

And yes, the RW will blame liberals, pagans, gays, non-Christians, scientists, intellectuals, literate high school graduates, and even the cat next door.

13. It's changing for sure
I've noticed people are traveling to one spot and staying put, whereas before they would travel from town to town on vacation. Gas prices are definitely hurting.
