What is TV-B-Gone?
Hangs on your keychain and turns off virtually any television within a radius of 45 feet.
A new weapon in the war against too much TV By Erik German
http://jscms.jrn.columbia.edu/cns/2005-03-15/german-tvvigilantesSomewhere in this quiet New York City bar, amid the clinking glasses, lunchtime laughter and flickering televisions, lurks a man on a secret mission. His name is Evan Leatherwood, and his task will not stay secret for long.
With a wry grin, the blue-eyed 25-year-old in a gray turtleneck fishes his weapon from a coat pocket. He draws out a black plastic device--smaller than a matchbox--attached to a key ring. It resembles a car alarm remote. Leatherwood aims it at the television suspended above the bar. Seconds later, CNN’s coverage of Martha Stewart goes black. Soon, every other television in Manhattan’s Heartland Brewery also winks out--ball games, newscasts and commercials disappear, one by one. Puzzled waitresses point at the dark screens.
Leatherwood laughs. He pockets the weapon--a $15 universal remote called TV-B-Gone, a device designed for stunts just like this. “It’s fun for anti-TV crusaders, obnoxious for employees,” Leatherwood said, still giggling.
Leatherwood is a foot soldier in the war against too much TV. As far back as the 1980s, organized groups of concerned citizens like the Society for the Eradication of Television, White Dot and Adbusters have implored Americans to watch less TV. Despite these groups’ efforts, televisions have become like electronic wallpaper in public places--blaring ubiquitously in the background of airports, waiting rooms and bars.
