What is TV-B-Gone?

Hangs on your keychain and turns off virtually any television within a radius of 45 feet.

A new weapon in the war against too much TV
By Erik German
http://jscms.jrn.columbia.edu/cns/2005-03-15/german-tvvigilantes

Somewhere in this quiet New York City bar, amid the clinking glasses, lunchtime laughter and flickering televisions, lurks a man on a secret mission. His name is Evan Leatherwood, and his task will not stay secret for long.

With a wry grin, the blue-eyed 25-year-old in a gray turtleneck fishes his weapon from a coat pocket. He draws out a black plastic device--smaller than a matchbox--attached to a key ring. It resembles a car alarm remote. Leatherwood aims it at the television suspended above the bar. Seconds later, CNN’s coverage of Martha Stewart goes black. Soon, every other television in Manhattan’s Heartland Brewery also winks out--ball games, newscasts and commercials disappear, one by one. Puzzled waitresses point at the dark screens.

Leatherwood laughs. He pockets the weapon--a $15 universal remote called TV-B-Gone, a device designed for stunts just like this. “It’s fun for anti-TV crusaders, obnoxious for employees,” Leatherwood said, still giggling.

Leatherwood is a foot soldier in the war against too much TV. As far back as the 1980s, organized groups of concerned citizens like the Society for the Eradication of Television, White Dot and Adbusters have implored Americans to watch less TV. Despite these groups’ efforts, televisions have become like electronic wallpaper in public places--blaring ubiquitously in the background of airports, waiting rooms and bars.

3. There's actually better ones around
That also change channels, and have volume controls (along with the on/off switch). I don't know if they work on Wal-Martaliban's overhead "All praise Sam Walton" Tee-vees though.

place.

THERE IS A GREAT CAMPAIGN GOING ON SOON.

FYI:The $10 US price + $5 shipping for the TV-B-Gone is an excellent price. I just paid $14.99 +4.95 shipping. The more you buy, the more you save. I have it on my keychain now, and it will be a joy to turn off TVs that are playing FAUX News in public places. You can keep it in your pocket, and no one will know what the hell is going on.

TV Turnoff Week April 25- May 1, 2005

It's time to fight back. For TV-Turnoff 2005 we've teamed up with the good folks at TV-B-Gone, makers of a pint-size remote control that shuts off any television, anywhere. You're in an airport, classroom, bank or bar and want to silence the idiot box? No problemo.

In a few weeks, JammerGroups all over the world will start reclaiming public space with this ingenious device. You can organize with others in your area by joining your city's JammerGroup . Share ideas and plans at the TV-Turnoff forum . And get your own TV-B-Gone at cost ($10US plus shipping).

TV-Turnoff week is a statement against dead-end couch culture. And it's about cleaning up the mental environment. Like our oceans and air, our shared mindscape is littered with pollutants -- distorted news, manipulative ads, violence and top-down culture.

The goal is simple. With a seven day tube-fast we shake up routines and get people questioning the role of TV in their lives.

Let's get started.

6. That will become a felony soon, I'm thinking.
Unplugging yourself from the Borg will not be permitted. Once they've criminalized this I'd suggest a .40 cal slug into the center of the tubes bcause it will have the same sentencing triad as using the secret remote.

Lest you think I'm nuts, there are plenty of penal statutes on the books in California to protect business. One example is that it's a felony here to stop on the side of the road and pick an apple from an orchard.
