Will The Concern For One Extrapolate To Concern For Many?
Edited on Sun Mar-20-05 10:29 AM by The Whiskey Priest
Are the extraordinary events taking place today a turning point for those who have demonstrate such total unconcern for the disadvantaged in this country? Are we witnessing a rebirth of concern for people by those who have only a few days ago acted in what can only be called a callous disregard for welfare of people. Has the sorrow and terrible circumstances of one individual finally resulted in the softening of the hearts of those whose rally cry has been to echo that of Senator Graham of Texas, who said years ago, “its time for them to get out of the wagon.” Maybe now we will see the federal and state governments act in a more compassionate way towards the disadvantaged within our society.

History would seem to lean towards this spectacle being a short-lived demonstration of compassion and that the concern for people will dim and blink out with the media klieg lights.

2. LOL! Compassion? Republicans? I don't think so.
Sadly, no. Terri Schiavo is nothing more than a prop for the wackjob right and their "right-to-life" fanaticism. There's no compassion involved; under the surface it's all about abortion. They have to go to the mat on this one so they can keep ranting about how "life is sacred," but they don't give a rat's ass about her or her family.

3. Whenever I see a magician
I tend to watch his "other" hand.

Whenever I see ANY government agency (national or local) putting on a public display of compassion, my eyes seek "the other hand". There must be an ulterior motive in there somewhere.

4. You're kidding, right?
No way in hell.

If you haven't noticed, conservatives cherry-pick causes that are either destined to fail or that require no real work at all, just a lot of screaming.

They do this for several reasons:

One, it boosts their own feeling of self-righteousness and moral superiority.

Two, it lets them feel persecuted. They can act like an oppressed minority and a victim of godless liberal elitists while their party controls all three branches of government.

Three, especially with the Schiavo case and anti-abortion, they don't really have to do anything. The "victims" (Terri, fetuses) can't really speak for themselves. Therefore, they can't speak out to say that the right isn't really doing anything to help them. The right just uses these people, and once they are finished with them they don't care if they live or die.

Conservatives don't care if a baby dies of starvation or for lack of health care once it is born, and they don't care if it is abandoned or neglected. They don't want to pay to help it.
And they wouldn't give a shit about Terri Schaivo if, say, the hospital were to discontinue treatment if she couldn't afford to pay.

They don't care.

This bullshit in Congress is just grandstanding to seal up the fundie vote and to make it seem as though the right values life.

I wouldn't even go as far as calling this a short term display of compassion. I see no compassion at all.

All I see is a bunch of self-important hypocrites trying to prove why they are better than everyone else.

they double the tax cut to the richest 2% and make it permanent, then they cut Medicare to the poorest disenfranchised ...and cut education, literally !DO NOTHING! for 13 years in the legislature but convene both houses to play doctor to save a dead girl !!!!!!!

they were really grasping for straws in this photo opp... with the hushed respectful tone o voice as though Terri were in a bed next to them.. what F'n CRAP.

the only thing they care about is MONEY, get'n more, and Blowing Corporate D*ck to get more..

the < * > was to keep from getting fined $500,000 for obscenity.. they talk about going after cell phone and computers next.. it is remarkable how one VERY little titty from a great distance could get such a RISE out of those old men.. maybe just because it was BLACK.. i think that is what they actually thought was obscene.

7. We should point out that not providing
decent health care for poor and working Americans is the same as pulling the plug. This is actually a compassion issue -- a liberal issue -- our issue.

We should be out there pointing to the many, many Terry Schiavos whose families cannot pay to keep them on support. How long does a state pay to keep Medicaid patients on support? I'd like to know that figure. How many people are taken off life support every year not because they have signed a living will but because there is no money to pay for their staying on? How many people can't get an important test because they can't afford to pay for it? How many people don't have routine test they need because they can't afford them. I'll bet those numbers are huge, and we should get them to the public. Does anyone know how to get this information?
